Help! - I can't seem to be able to switch from the US 2.08 MTP to US 2.08 UMS using the Config.dat file. Do I have to downgrade to V1.20 to switch to UMS?

No you don't have to ! Guys, I've followed this topic and I got to tell you that you don't have to downgrade at all before upgrading, you just have to modify a simple line of code in a file + adding the config.dat
Anyway, if someone wants more details, you just have to ask me .... |

Why don't you just post how you did it then?

Not really, I don't really care of what you think guys ....
So the method is whatever your firmware is : - create the config file .... + going to the folder SYSTEM > opening the file SYTEM.VER and modify what you want : VER 3.07 KR UMS MODEL P2 DRM NE.PD As it worked for me, it will certainly work for everyone ![]() PS : guys don't be so aggressive with people who want to help you ...

Isn't it possible to just update from the EU firmware to the KR fw?
I think the KR fw is always UMS |

You will have to have an XP machine initially, so go over to a friends house the first time. If you change it to UMS then it will work on your mac no problems.

One thing I'd recommend when using a UMS converted P2 on a Mac.. I'd avoid using iTunes as your Music Manager/Sync program.
I have now had to reformat/re-install firmware 3 different times on 2 completely different P2's, due to my nephew using a KR UMS firmware P2 on a Mac-Mini. I am not 100% certain that iTunes is causing an un-recoverable error each time.. but everything points to that being the case. YMMV. iTunes on the Mac also creates a trash bin on the P2 and numerous .DS store files.. which tend to play havoc with the proper operation of the device.

iTunes should be avoided. The primary reason for switching to UMS in my opinion was to avoid the Draconian/proprietary architectures of Microsoft, it doesn't make the most sense to switch to the equally "special" architecture of a program like iTunes.
Utew, if you have to do another re-format, could you test to see whether the region/mode change settings described by this poster HERE work? I'd love for a simple solution to the problem. I just don't have any reason to change the region of my player so I'm not terribly interested in messing with it

Hopefully, I have the problem solved with my nephew's P2.. I have him charging via AC adapter and transferring via D&D.. so far so good.
![]() One member claims he has changed from MTP to UMS via the method stated by cornedrue77.. using the config.dat + sys.ver change. Doubt I'll be doing a test myself.. as I'm of your opinion sassafras. But if I do, I'll be sure to give an update.

For the sake of experiment, I just tried this with my 8gb P2 3.07 EU firmware:
Added a Config.dat file, within which I had changed MTP to UMS, to the P2 root folder. Backed up and renamed the system.ver file, then replaced it with one where the only thing changed was MTP to UMS. I unplugged the P2 from my PC (Vista Home Premium). It momentarily "updated library" then turned itself off. When I turned it on again plugged back into the PC, the Config.dat files was gone, and the system.ver file I had added was changed back to reading MTP. Unless there is some step I missed, this method does NOT work to change a 3.07 version from MTP to UMS. 4D |

As I suspected, I think the system.ver is more of a diagnostic indicator than anything that actually controls the firmware install. I think the firmware region and mode is set upon it's actual flashing to the drive, not every time the player initializes... As it would have to be if the system.ver actually controlled it.

I didn't add the firmware files, just a config.dat file. I'll give it another try with 3.07 firmware files, a config.dat file, and a change in the system.ver file. I love a good experiment.
4D OK, that took a minute. No effect. Same results as before, except it did "upgrade" my firmware from 3.07 to 3.07. No UMS using this strategy. |

If I make my P2 UMS will I still be able to download songs from Wal-Mart or no? Yeah, I know this is a noobish question.

That depends, YeppBoy..
If the downloaded songs are protected ie DRMed, then you would not be able to play them back on a UMS firmware P2. MTP firmware and Plays4Sure (DRM) work hand in hand to allow for playback of subscription and payed-for DRM restricted music. The idea here, is to keep you from sharing or making copies of the downloaded music that you payed for. This would apply to any pay-for Music Download services, that attach DRM to their songs. BTW that isn't a noobish question at all IMO... and a question that many have and don't really understand the answer to.

I researched it and WalMart sells mp3s un-DRMed at 256 kbps. Not bad for an evil corporation.
They also sell DRM enabled WMA tracks at 128kbps. Avoid these at all costs and you should be safe
