Default My quest for an 80GB Zune...

With my iRiver H120 being obsolete, and nothing else out there remotely like it (the Cowon X5 having been discontinued), I decided to go for the Zune 80GB. I work with several people who have the 30GB model and like it a lot.

My plan today was to log on to the Zune Originals site so I could (hopefully) order one in red, as I really love that color. However, that site isn't taking orders for the 80GB until December. After seeing the art and the engraving, that wasn't interesting enough to wait for the color. So I decided to venture out and buy one.

Briefly, here's what I encountered:

- Target: Only had 1 pink 4GB model
- Best Buy: Only selling the 80GB models online (had some 4 and 8GB models in)
- Walmart: Only had 4 and 8GB models, and !!!didn't even have them pulled yet!!! They had to go to the back to see what they had and pull it out.
- Circuit City: Pretty much didn't know specifics, but found that they had no new models in stock. They said one store in our area had 1 80GB in stock.

What kind of a launch is this? I'm sort of torqued off right now...

First, I'd like to physically see one before I purchase one (even if I do purchaste it online).

Second, there's nowhere online that has them in stock now. So I'm either waiting for an online site to get them and then ship them, or I'm waiting for a retail site to get them in and I go pick it up. I prefer the retail approach...

Just because retail is out doesn't mean they don't have one on display.

There's no place that has had one, display or otherwise, for me to look at and hold, let alone buy.

Finally found one at Walmart today. Almost didn't see it - it was set behind a numbe of the 4GB boxes, and everything but the "80GB" was obscured. Bought it, plus a red 4GB for my son. We'll see over the weekend how much pain I endure getting my collection onto it.

Lots of luck with your new purchase. The only negatives I can think of about the Zune is that it does not provide gapless playback, and unlike the H120, which IMO is one of the best DAPs ever marketed, there is no Rockbox port. Also, AFAIK the Zune is not a UMS device.

Trust me, the Zune was not my first choice. The Cowon X5 was top of my list: FLAC, UMS, great SQ, etc. But they're impossible to find and selling near $400 used on eBay. That leaves 2 devices on the market now that are music-focused and large enough for me - the iPod and the Zune. I'm anti-Apple and hate iTunes, but was tempted since I can sync an iPod from Media Monkey, which is what I've used for a long time now. Ultimately I went w/ the Zune for the bigger screen, lossless WMA if I decide to go that route, because I like to be a little different, and to stick it to Apple.

Here's a quick $.02 on my opinion so far.

I love the device itself. Great controls, excellent fit-and-finish. Some 30gb Zune owners compared it to theirs, and they really like it.

The "premium" headphones weren't so great. No bass at all, and the vocal range sounded tinny / hollow. I've got a $40 pair of Philips noise-cancelling in-ear phones, and the Zune sound very good with them. I'd like a little more bass (and I'm not a bass freak). In this case, I'd like to see some basic EQ functionality re-introduced.

My son got the 4gb model and is using the wireless sync. He really likes that a lot. I just entered the WAP2 password from my router for him into the Zune software, and everything works (maybe the only stuff from the Zune software that does .

The horridness of the Zune software cannot be overstated. I gave up on iTunes 2+ years ago and have sworn by Media Monkey ever since then (for my old iRiver H120 - never had an iPod). I didn't think media mgmt software could be dumbed down more than iTunes, but MS has succeeded, and how! Everything you'd typically want to do to manage this stuff is either not there or unusable - album art, metadata, fine-grained control of rip and sync behavior, drag-and-drop where it's not needed or doesn't work consistently, no drag-and-drop where it should be (e.g. album art), etc.

I'm new to the Zune scene, and I know that v1 of the software was a re-badged Windows Media Player. I'm hopeful that this version (2.1?) is so lacking in functionality because it's a ground-up rewrite and that (hopefully near-) future versions quickly add these capabilities.

There you go,

Donnie

Well I have a Zune 8 and 80 (one of them is going back, just have to decide which one).

Pros:
-Sound is good. I've had ipod, samsung, some generic brand mp3 player, and this one sounds very good relative to the rest.
-Interface is intuitive, i really like how to navigate through the menus...there is one exception though (see cons)
-Album art is nice
-Zune Social is a nice add on for those with Xbox live.
-Screen is bright even on lowest settings.

Cons:
-No EQ (not really a biggy for me)
-The shell of the 80gb is very hard and sturdy, and because of that i don't know if that's better or worse for the hard drive (it feels like it's delicate...like i feel like i have to lay it on my desk gently.....this is my first HDD mp3 player though, so I might be paranoid).
-Video requires conversion, even if it is WMV....hope you have a quad core/multiple processors.
-It would be nice if you didn't have to click the pad but instead slide the touch pad forward. it seems like a logical extension of the menu/touch pad interface, but if you want to execute a menu option, you have to click the pad. It would be nice to have the option to just use the touch pad entirely.
-Songs with long names don't scroll while on the display during play.
-Glass cover over display gets smudged real easily. Have some windex/vingear ready lol
-The Software is horrible (co-signing the above posts). However, if you use it with WMP, it isn't that bad. I still use WMP11 to create my playlists and to edit ID3 tags.

I know the cons look longer than the pros, but I actually find more to like than to not like. Except for the video conversion, most of the cons are minor inconvienences.

Also, for those that have hdd players, is it normal to occasionally feel the hd moving from time to time? I do with the Zune 80.
