The up and down buttons control volume while you are in the playing screen. the now playing screen can be reached quickly by pressing the windows button if you are not currently there.

im a big fan of the dedicated volume button... this is the next best thing.

Snap! That was quick, thanks. I guess from what you described, this way of controlling volume isn't exactly a deal-killer. But, dang, I'll still wish it had dedicated buttons if I get it.
