I know almost all of the forth gen Archos have to same video format support, with that said does the Archos 4 gen support .avi (specifically 404) On Archos's website it says it supports MPEG-4 (ASP@L5 AVI, up to DVD resolution) and WMV (MP@ML, up to DVD resolution) More specifaclly via the online instruction manual, AVI file container with MP4 file format. So is that a yes, It does support avi, if so what does the "with MP4 file format" mean?

Well, avi is just what they call it - a container. So you can have multiple avi files with different innards. (Codecs, etc) It depends on what the particular innards are, is what controls whether the Archos can play the file. I'm not sure offhand how you'd find out what the innards of any given file are, other than putting it on the Archos and seeing if it plays. *shrug*
