well i checked up and they seem to made some progress. they got the firmware to go through i think and all they need now is to hack the nk.bin file i think.. not sure but this sounds like good news. i could care less about the video playback, ill still keep my videos for the zen os.but i really want to see a big improvement on the audio quality. hey Dfkt, do you think there will be a big improvement if the TMS320 chip is anygood?

The DAC/SOC alone doesn't make the SQ, depends on the whole signal path... but the parametric EQ and crossfeed of Rockbox should certainly help in tweaking the sound to one's liking.

Texas Instruments DAC/DSPs certainly are very good - I like the X5's TI sound better than the D2's Wolfson.

Why are having so much trouble getting the Rockbox to work on the ZV:M? Or to hack the firmware?

We are having trouble getting the ZVM to accept non-official firmware due to it employing a Checksum to ensure that only official firmware is accepted. Until we 'crack' that, we can't put any modded firmware onto the ZVM.

AAC playback is implemented in Rockbox already - H.264 not, only MPEG1/2 playback.

I wish I new programming or that there were more people working on it. If the Vision M was as popular as the ipod, it would have probably been cracked by now.

No updates in a while, just checked the rockbox forum yesterday and there weren't any posts about any progress.

Default Update of Rockbox status on ZV:M

Seems there hasn't been any posts here in recent months, but I'd like to announce that our own Maurus Cuelenaere has managed to finally get Rockbox up to a semi-working state on the Zen Vision:M!

More details about the port are here: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CreativeZVMPort

Please note that sound isn't working yet, but you can patch the bootloader and get it to run a compiled build of Rockbox. This requires you to have some skills in compiling custom code. Once in Rockbox, you can use the in-progress USB stack (only USB 1.1 speeds for now) to transfer files.

Testers are welcome to help us! Come join us at the Rockbox forums: http://forums.rockbox.org

If you're interested in testing, you can also pop by our IRC channel #rockbox on freenode.

Naww...
I really, really want rockbox to come out soon!
I was gonna ask though... would it take heaps of computer skills to get it on the ZV:M when it is released?

I doubt it, though the Creative ports will be somewhat more complicated since you'll probably have to reformat the device to FAT32.

http://rasher.dk/rockbox/simulator/
Just scroll down to Creative Zen Vision: M 30GB. It says its for the 30GB but when I run it, it says 60GB at the top. Controls are the arrow keys and space is to select.

In short, Rockbox only supports MPEG1/2 at the moment.

perhaps someone could recruit someone from the vlc team to make the rockbox compatable with those codecs
