There are a few people working on the Rockbox port to the ZV:M. Any help would be appreciated... http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...reativeZVMPort

Rockbox is an alternative firmware for mp3 players. It gives better battery life most of the time, much better sound quality, games, EXtremely customizable, codec support for audio is gigantic : Mp3, Wav, ogg, flac, aac, . and more? look here

Whoa, great news... just imagine MSC, Ogg, FLAC, gapless playback, and a parametric EQ on the ZV:M.

It seems the biggest problem they're facing right now is getting the ZVM's bootloader to load the hacked firmware off the hard drive. Something about a validation check.

What I'm wondering is, since the Recovery Mode UI, its functions, and the bootloader all reside in the player's NVRAM, couldn't they program their firmware loader to over-write the NVRAM code, re-incorporate the Recovery Mode functions into the NVRAM, and replace the bootloader code so that it can properly load the Rockbox OS off the hard drive?

Considering Rockbox's current support of video, i don't think the Rockbox OS can support all the features of the current OS. As such the only viable strategy is like the Ipod - to dualboot with both the Rockbox OS and the Creative OS. So it probably won't be a good idea to overwrite the NVRAM and boot only the Rockbox OS.

his/her last post
"Well, not very fast I guess, besides the fact I cannot find any information on how the USB-protocol is used by software (which dll to use or whatever..) I'm kinda busy with school. and I have to (sadly enough) spend some time on it, because I do want my (degree/diploma?).. but if anyone knows something about how USB is managed, then I might be able to do the same thing for that as mceulenare has done with his VERNEL32.dll. and then we'll know some more about how the firmware is checked.."

They are trying to develop one for ZVM (Check their Other projects page).
But they can't get the ZVM to accept unofficial firmware due to some checksum. But they are making progress.

I wonder if they will be able to get real UMS support in and the option to have the player sort the files like the way you put them on the player

Sure, that's a basic function of Rockbox - you can have both, file/folder and ID3 browsing. Rockbox is UMS/MSC by design.
