I player did that once. I shut down my computer for the night thinking about dealing with the problem the next day. When I started my computer up again my player connected just fine and I haven't had a problem since. I'm not sure what happened exactly. Though none of my music went off.

You might try shutting the computer down, plugging in your z5 and then turning the computer back on. I know that's what I have to do to get my friends laptop to recognize my USB powered external hard drive. It might also be helpful to tell us what operating system you are using since they all have their own little quirks. I personally have had problems getting certain distributions of Linux to recognizing my Z5 without a little jiggery pokery.

I assume from your statement about using the CD that you are running Windows, but which version specifically? If it's XP, then you shouldn't need the CD at all. Also, what firmware version are you using? Have you tried connecting in UMS mode? (Hold down the back button when connecting, or in newer versions of the firmware you can set the player to UMS only)

i had no idea you could do the "hold down back button" thing to force UMS mode!!

you made my day.

I was trying to do the firmware update so i'd have the option, but it wouldn't connect for me to copy over the update file... all fixed now.

I have experienced this (the "USB Connecting..." thing with no connection ever occuring) twice today on two different computers, both at home and at work. I've used my Z5 on both computers pretty much every day for the past year. Any clues what is going on? It seems I can sometimes get a UMS or MTP connection for a few seconds (and actually for a few minutes only once), but then the player just returns to the regular listening screen. When I am unable to get either a UMS or MTP connection, it literally just stays on the "USB Connecting..." screen until I disconnect it. The battery indicator tells me it is charging even during this, but I can't access it through any drive letters. I was going to re-install the 2.47 firmware, but it seems Samsung has removed any support or downloads for the Z5 from its US site (adding to the frustration and disheartening nature of this). Any help out there?

Update: So I was able to get it to connect for literally about 30 seconds, but enough time for me to load the 2.48 firmware update available on the firmware thread. Still no help. It's sitting here saying "USB connecting..." GRRRRRRRRRRRR! Any help?

The fact that it will spontaneously connect then disconnect again regardless of connection protocol indicates that it could be the cable... This is all I can think of which could be your problem, since it is possible for the cable to charge a device but not be recognised by the computer.

Have a look at what the firmware version says! If it shows weird firmware version like 0.0.0.0 or something like that. It is likely that your player is fried. Mine was and I got a refurbished one. ;-) Good luck!

Well it looks like it is the USB because I can fidget with it a bunch and usually get a connection (although sometimes I have to really hold it tightly and in just the right direction). So it looks like I'll be ordering a new USB cable for it. Any recommendations on this? Has anyone tried one of these: http://www.gomadic.com/samsung-yp-z5...usb-cable.html

Or should I order a Samsung original? Any advice?

I would trust Gomadic's cables and with their tip exchange program it makes things easier if you start use a different player in the future.

Thanks so much for your useful insights Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander. You've been very helpful on both counts. I think I'll give the Gomadic a try.

Hello.

Im having connecting problems. My player charged Ok but when I unplugged it, it just said 'finishing' on the player screen and now I cant get 'finishing' off unless I turn my device off manually and its still there when I turn it back on again. Its refusing to play any music and when I tried reconnecting, it just says 'connecting'

I tried resetting but the reset button isnt responding.

Has my player died?

Edit. Problem resolved . xxxxx
