Default Sony now supports drag-and-drop mp3 transfers

I just found this on the Sonystyle website:

http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/ser...0n46922n100259

Check out #3: Drag and Drop. Follow the link and download the patch.

My girlfriend broke the Sony mp3 player that I gave her (*sob*) but I'm now considering buying a Sony player if it allows drag-and-drop. Could someone test this?

I would be shocked and amazed if this is really UMS.

Also, it says:

Export your songs with the quick and easy "drag and drop" management software*

And looking at the URL in more detail it does look like that it does use a 'file manager' of some kind.

My Sony is broken, so I can't demo this software, but the description continues:

"Simply open your music folder and another window for your MP3 Walkman®. Click on the audio files of your choice, drag them from one window to another and your music is automatically transferred to the MP3 Player"

It feels like all the data transfer is being done through regular explorer windows... can anyone confirm this?

If it needs software, then it is not "true" drag and drop (UMS). Plus this software is only for the "E" series.

sony's sonic stage is a REAL pain in the ass to get working. it took me several hours to get my friends working. keeps on crashing and so on.. so he sold it and got something more easier to use like a creative 6gb neeon.

I have used this Sony drag and drop software. Yes, I Used "drag and drop" and software in the same sentence. It is not truly drag and drop, but it is pretty similar... as the small exe file is run from a folder on the player. Just drag folders of mp3s onto the window and they become playlists.
Sony was forced into this because of their miserable software.

I bought the new Sony Video Walkman and you can drag and drop files. Both music, (mp3), Photos and Videos.

Does this "drag and drop" software works with the NW-E005F?

It will work in both modes, but it is MTP (with drag and drop functionality) on XP or Vista. I'm not sure if there is a way to force it to use MSC mode on those OSes, but it will autodetect and work as MSC on Windows 2000, OS X, Ubuntu etc.

another q, if music is transfered to the player in msc, will the player format itself so that you can browse by id3, or will you be restricted to folder browsing?

If it has tags, you can browse via ID3. Tags and transfer mode have no relation to one another.

oh, i see, thanks. I was thinking of a situation like the clix 2 where you have to manually "rebuild database" in the menu when you add new songs so that you may browse using id3. Or archos players where the player builds your "arc library" every time you start the player.

FYI on forcing MSC mode for this player in XP or Vista:

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f15/th...ml#post3554811

It can be done. I had to do a driver rollback to get it back to MTP though, so I certainly won't be messing with it anymore.

I've considered getting the new Sony player, and one of the main considerations was the dropping of the SonicStage software, and moving to a "drag and drop" type music installation. I don't mind using software to install music as an option, but I'd also like other options.

One thing that would cause me to immediately buy one of their players is if they had the option to use a "mirror a folder" type of set up, where you create a folder on your hard drive, put your music in there and arrange it as you like, and when you connect the player it will mirror the contents of that folder. For me, that would be even better than the "drag and drop" method.

Well, I use Vista, XP, and Ubuntu and what I do is just throw a Breifcase into my music folder. That pretty much does exactly what you are asking for.
