Default Writing/Connected mode control with Ubuntu?

I am using Ubuntu 6.10 with my sansa e200 and noticed I am unable to write to the device after I remove/add anything to the device.
For example, after connecting I add a folder and the screen will then change from 'Connected' to 'Writing'. After the transfer is complete the screen will still show 'Writing' and any attempts to write to the device will come back with the following type of errors:
Quote:
"/media/usbd...ve/test.txt" cannot be deleted because it is on a read-only disk.
Quote:
Error "I/O error" while deleting "/media/usb...one/..~5m".
To fix the problem I have to ubplug the device, let it refresh, plug it back in and perform the next task.

Any ideas on what is causing this and how to create a permanent solution?

Hum, never had that problem before. Maybe it is a corrupt filesystem. Have you tried using fsck.vfat?

But the OP should be able to do multiple operations before doing that. Something is wrong here.

When you finish the move of your music to the sansa, do you use the "eject" under the mounted device? Thats what I do and I use Kubunty 6.10, works great. No issues.

Thanks for everyone's replies..

Ejecting/unmounting the device is not really where the problem comes about. The problem is when trying to do more than one operation to the sansa.
But, yes. I can copy a file to the device, right click -> eject / unmount without any problems.

As far as putting the device in 'sync', perhaps clarify on what this involves? Are you talking about using a media manager to sync the device after I do a drag and drop? or to only use the sync option when connecting to the sansa?

The fix I have come up with thus far is to get on a XP machine that is on my network and add files that way, which works fine - I can add/delete as many times as I want with no errors. I would still like to fix the solution for my linux box though.

This is really strange, I have never had this problem before. Have you tried running fsck.vfat on the device? Do you have problems with other USB based VFAT storage devices? I think you should ask on the Ubuntu mailinglist.

I am now using Feisty Fawn and have no trouble connecting/writing to the device. dunno what the issue was, but it seems to have worked itself out. *shrug*

How are you mounting it? I have never tried on ubuntu, but i have manually set up a mount point on slackware.

Check /etc/fstab and see what it says mine is something like "/dev/sda1 /mnt/sansa vfat rw,noauto, user, gid=guest" the last part doesn't matter that much, just make sure its /dev/sda1 and vfat.

I think it might behave a little differently than in windows no matter what because of the way linux handles mounting, but I haven't experienced the problems you are describing.
