But I really didn't do anything but swap the hard drive for flash. The real work was done years ago by the Archos engineers, and that work was in developing excellent software and fitting it inside an excellent industrial design. Today's manufacturers are pretty good at the latter, but they don't feel the need for the former; they underestimate the desirability of a flexible, fully featured software set, or just don't want to invest the resources in it. The functionality the software kings of yesterday's super-daps had; rio, Archos, Cowon (though to their credit they're still producing players with their legacy software (I think the M2 is largely based on the D2 'superDAP', correct me if I'm wrong) is largely absent from even very high-priced audiophile players. IMO the software should be given much more importance, not just in terms of stability, but functionality.
