I'd go with a modest 4 channel power amp, something that does 40 to 60W RMS per channel. (I picked up a used Rockford-Fosgate last summer for $44.) For front speakers, try a car-parts swap meet. At one I attended, there was a guy selling piles of speakers and decks that had been salvaged from scrapped cars. Craigslist, flea markets, and yard sales are other possibilities. I'd budget more money for the subwoofer, and look for a sealed-box sub with good excursion, something like the JL 10W1, NHT1259, Adire Tempest or Shiva, or that one Parts Express sells I can't remember the name of. Bridge two channels of the amp into the sub, if the impedance is suitable, or go with 2 or more subs if you can afford them and the cabinet volume. Buying subs used is a little risky, but if you can move the cone up and down without feeling or hearing any scraping, and the surround isn't rotted, that's a start. But, there's probably some real value-for-money subs available new; check a dedicated car audio forum. Yet another possibility: use the woofer(s) (or complete speaker) from an old home stereo speaker. Stereo speakers can be had for a few bucks at thrift stores and yard sales these days, and not just chain-store junk.
