Default Some Qs related to use with Linux

/u/dawningistheday 's review helped me decide on the Plenue D and now I have it. I'm loading it up from a Vortexbox, which is a Fedora 23-based distro made for rendering and serving as a NAS.

The Plenue replaces a Cowon D2+ which was nine years old when the slide switch finally broke. The music went from ok to really good, even with crap earbuds. I like it and I will like it much better when I find decent earbuds.

So when I start looking around in the box here is what I find:

>Disk /dev/sdb is the stock Plenue D and none of its partitions will mount via the command mnt.

[Disk /dev/sdb: 30.8 GiB, 33034338304 bytes, 64520192 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x6f20736b

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1 778135908 1919645538 1141509631 544.3G 72 unknown
/dev/sdb2 168689522 2104717761 1936028240 923.2G 65 Novell Netware 386
/dev/sdb3 1869881465 3805909656 1936028192 923.2G 79 unknown
/dev/sdb4 2885681152 2885736650 55499 27.1M d unknown

Partition table entries are not in disk order.

> Disk /dev/sdc is the 128 GB SD card:

Disk /dev/sdc: 119 GiB, 127775277056 bytes, 249561088 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x869aa76d

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1 32768 249561087 249528320 119G c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

And copying to /dev/sdc1 works, once mounted, right from the disk in the Vortexbox. It goes pretty quick. However:

cp: cannot create regular file ‘/mnt/plenue/Mariza_-_Fado_Curvo/09_Entre_o_rio_e_a_razão.flac’: Invalid argument
cp: cannot create regular file ‘/mnt/plenue/Mary_Hopkin_-_Those_Were_the_Days/06_Que_Será,_Será_(Whatever_Will_Be,_Will_Be).flac ’: Invalid argument
cp: cannot create directory ‘/mnt/plenue/Mylène_Farmer_-_Cendres_de_lune’: Invalid argument

As far as I can see any filename containing an apostrophe, an accented character, a ligature like the Scandinavian æ or any non-Latin character produces this issue. It is probably something about codepage - the rest of the Vortexbox doesn't have this issue, displaying things like Hindi and Japanese characters without error. What can be done about the issue?
