Default $399 the new price sweetspot?

When Apple announced the iPad 2, all retailers of the first iPad marked them down $100 to clear stock. I've been around town today, looking everywhere that sold them for a 16gb WiFi iPad 1. Not one to be found, although I saw several 32gb, 64gb, WiFi with 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb 3G iPad 1s. Every retailed admitted the $499 16gb WiFi iPads they had sitting on their shelves for months disappeared in a day at $399.

What does that tell me? For sane people with budgets and kids to feed, $500 is too danged high for any tablet iPad or other. Apparently $400 is "easier" to rationalize for some high tech.

So today I'm betting that within 6 months the iPad 2 will come in a $399 version. Knowing Apple, they'll do it by removing some feature from the 16gb WiFi version, like 8gb of memory maybe.
