Do I need an amp with my setup?

I have Sennheiser HD 380 pro's the player I'm using is my iphone 4, I was wondering if I should just pick up an fiio e5/e6 just so I can use the lineout, unless I need a better amp to drive these headphones?

They are low impedance and high sensitivity, so no.

I assumed, just for the sake of being able to use the lineout would be enough to justify buying a decent amp.

There is basically no reason to use a line out, except with things like stereos.

From what I've heard, the lineout quality of apple devices sounds better then the headphone port itself.

I will add that some of us use an amp "because we can". But I find using an amp with a phone, an iPhone at that, to be a waste. The iPhone has quite enough driving power for the HD380 Pro. They were designed to be easier to drive than the HD280 Pro. As stated, no amp needed.

You’ll read that kind of bullshit from the same people that don’t believe in testing other than what their golden ears supposedly hear. Take a look at dfkt’s measurements on his cowon X5L of heaphone out VS line out. Per the test you can easily see that sometimes lineout isn’t as good as the golden ears claim … X5L Line Out VS X5L Headphone Out
