Well, yes, I realize that. But while that rule works in theory, in practice it doesn't always work that way. In my 25+ years of working with electronics, I've seen some spectacular displays of pyrotechnics result from supplying a circuit more current that it was designed for.

Battery-charging circuits are one of those things for which that rule doesn't always apply. A charging battery has the tendancy to try to draw as much current as it can take - particularly true the more depleted the battery is - and supplying more current than the charging circuit can handle can have disastrous results if the circuit doesn't have adequate engineering controls in place.
