Default Windows Phone Store surpasses 150,000 apps

In a post on the Windows Phone Developer Blog entitled “Reflecting on 2012: scale and opportunity,” Microsoft’s Todd Brix quietly revealed a few key facts about the Windows Phone Store. Particularly, the fact that the app marketplace has officially surpassed the 150,000 app barrier.

Now, to be fair, 150,000 is a far cry from the 600,000 to 700,000 apps boasted by Android and iOS, but it’s a significant figure nonetheless. This is especially due to the fact that half of these apps were added in the last year alone. The average Windows Phone user has now downloaded 54 apps, and 300,000 updates were pushed out over the last twelve months. That’s more than 800 updates per day.

Finally, in addition to recapping the explosive growth in the number of available markets, Brix rattled off a few statistics like the fact that 85% of people now prefer Live Apps (apps which support live tiles, Start screen information, etc.) and that 75% of people actually prefer carrier billing. The latter is especially surprising, and the number of purchases made with carrier billing is actually twice as high as credit cards.

The Windows Phone Store is still small when compared to the competition, but it’s growing at a rapid pace. 2013 should be a great year for the app store. Are there any apps you’re still waiting for?
