Default Unable to sync content...

Right now, it seems that I am having difficulties with synchronizing content to my Creative Zen Nano Plus 1GB. I just want to put a couple of songs on there to fill a small memory gap (I have 13MB of free memory on the device) and it won't let me sync in WMP11 or even drag and drop. Is there anyone who can help?

When you open the device in Windows Explorer as a drive, how much space does Windows tell you is left?

13.1 MB are left, out of 957MB total.

EDIT: Also, when the sync fails in WMP, it says that "Windows Media Player cannot find the file." I can access the files I'm trying to sync just fine, as well as my Zen Nano Plus.

Just out of curiosity, why are you using a sync manager for that player? Is it just easier for you? I usually just drag-and-drop stuff onto my MuVo, but that's just me.

It kind of sounds like WMP is not finding the files on your computer. Have you moved any of your MP3's around lately? WMP9 and 10 tend to have a hard time dealing with files they know exist, but cannot find where it used to be if you move something. WMP11 is a lot better at this.

It's also possible that, even though you have enough physical space left to squeeze in another song or two, you might not have any free file allocations left. This is especially true if you have a lot of smaller files and you've formatted your player as a FAT16 drive. Try copying everything off your player and reformatting it as a FAT32 drive. If file allocation is the issue, FAT32 will fix it.

I use a sync manager so that I can compress music files during sync to 128kbps in order to squeeze more songs onto it.

EDIT: I've checked it, and it's FAT32 already...

It looks like we've got another Nano user with the same problem. I'm going to have to dig up docs on the player and see if I can get this figured out.

I've never used a sync manager on my MuVo, but I think I'm going to give that a try tonight.

Thanks!

Actually, I decided to delete some content off of my Nano Plus just this morning, and I was able to move some stuff around and put a few songs on there (in Windows Explorer), although eventually I was unable to move files around on the player again. The signal I'm getting from this is that it is indeed a file allocation problem, even though I only have 231 songs on my player at the moment.

That's what it sounds like to me as well.

I know this sounds silly, but run Diskcheck on your player. Just right-click its drive icon, select Properties, go to the second tab, and click Check Disk for Errors. If that doesn't work out, then I'd suggest a reformat.

I've run into the same problem and Creative has confirmed in email that there is a limit on the number of files/folders the player can "see". If you go over the limit, the files are there (you can access them with Windows Explorer) but the player does not see them.

Here's what Creative said:

Quote:
As regards to your concern on your Zen Nano Plus, I would like to inform
you that The number of files you can store in the root folder or
subfolders of a flash memory player is greatly influenced by the file
name structure of the files that you want to copy and the operating
system.

If all your file names are lower case and comply with the 8.3 file
naming convention you can have 256 files in the root.
If files are in the 8.3 format but have a mix of upper and lower case
letters you can only have 128 files.
If you are using long file names, the maximum number of files will be
dependent on the number of characters in the file name.
In addition, these players can display up to 500 files, and up to 50
folders (including subfolders, and built-in folders such as "Recorded
Tracks" and "Encoded Tracks") at one time. Once the unit reads the 500th
file or the 50th folder, any files/folders yet to be read will not be
seen at all.

To maximize the use of storage space, avoid using long file names and
file names with mixed lower and upper cases; create folders or
subfolders, and then move music files from the root folder to new
folders; limit the level of folders to 4th level including root.
Caveat emptor.

Is it safe to have the Zen Nano in Fat32? I thought it couldn't handle that.
