Default Thinking about buying a Cowon X9

Firstly, apologies if I'm posting in the wrong section.

I'm thinking about buying a Cowon X9, as all I want is to be able to listen to music at a good quality. I don't need to watch videos, use apps or play games, just a good device that plays music.

After some research I found that the X9 has a software db limitation of 8k music files, including external memory. Now I have already a music collection of around 5.5k music files, and I was hoping to pay a bit more for a device that would last me a long time. I probably wont reach 8,000 quickly, but I just don't like knowing that limitation is there...

Is there any workaround for this? Such as using custom firmware like Rockbox?

If there isn't, would there be any point in getting the 32GB version over the 16GB (which is £30 cheaper), and just buying an external sd card, seeing as the storage is "limited"?

Any thought would be appreciated, as if I'm spending a lot of money on a music device, I want to make sure I make the right choice!

Thanks!

It is 8000 music files per each directory (i.e. 8000 on internal AND 8000 on external). I have a 32GB J3 which has the same limitation, and I have all of the files on internal memory (which is full) ripped at V2 mp3 (~192kbps) and only have about 4750 music files, so I feel like this file limit issue is a little blown out of proportion. I do have a 64GB microSD card, and the file limit could become an issue if I had all V2 mp3s on it, but I use the card for my larger bitrate files (I have a lot of stuff I ripped long ago at 320kbps), so there's no danger of reaching the file limit there either.
Hope that helps.

Hmm, well the user manual for your J3 specifies the following:
Number of files and folders recognizable
COWON J3 : up to 12,000 folders / 12,000 files
(music/video file: 8,000 + others: 4,000)
MicroSD card : up to 12,000 folders / 12,000 files
(music/video file: 8,000 + others: 4,000

Whereas the X9 this:
This device can recognize up to 12,000 folders,
and up to 12,000 files (up to 8,000 music/
video files and up to 4,000 files of other
supported formats).

Which to me sounds like the J3 can recognise 8,000 + 8,00, and the X9 only 8,000.

Like I said the limitation might not be that big of an issue , I just want to make sure the player will be future proof as I would like it to last a good few years.

Well, let's wait for someone else to chime in. I've been wrong before, but I'm pretty certain the X9 and the J3 are the same on this issue.
Marvin The Martian, The DarkSide, you guys had an X9!

Mine was a 32GB and I had a 32GB card in it, but I don't remember how many files I had on it altogether. TDS had it after I did, he might remember better.

I only had a little over 8,000 files on the 80 GB 5.5G iPod, so I probably was only around 6k on the X9.

I don't know,...I use max bitrate VBR MP3 music files, so I never had an issue with capacity.

Ok, thanks guys! Would you say the x9 was a good choice or should I be looking at something like the d20, or even another brand?
