Slimbo, as long as your AK120 purchase suits your needs that's the most important thing. Hopefully you took a blind listening test before your purchase.

AK100 suffers from the classic problem rendering it incompatible with certain types of headphones. Assuming the RWA mod means lowering the 22ohm output impedance then its probably a legit one... The AK120, on the other hand, is a solid performer as far as I know. Likely won't be audibly better than your average Sandisk player etc but still nice to know you will get decent audio quality for the indecent price

Default Ak 120 A/B testing

I didn't do blind testing but was able to a/b the AK 120 against my Olive O4hD music server at home as well as in my car. Compared to my Olive playing the same tracks the Wolfson Dac's had a smooth sound much like very good analogue I've always liked the sound of the olive but this is just better and more lifelike to my ears. Of course the Ak 120 doesn't have he 2 tb's of storage the olive has but with sd cards I will be able to download 64 gb playlists. In my car playing on aux it just blows away the iPod classic loaded with apple lossless files. As a bonus I am able to put it in my pocket and listen to superb sound anywhere. I m well aware of the coloration and limits of my x 10 iem's and own a number of other headphones including senheisser momentum's as well as denon overears. I plan on looking at new iem's soon. My home audio is a Luxman 505 ux, rega RP 6, the olive, a Denon 2910 for sacd and Spendor S8e speakers.

You can really tell a difference in your car? Seriously? That's about the last place I'd choose to evaluate sound quality.

Or wasn't the engine on?

In car? Yeah, me to. Much better in car compared to cowon D2, ipod, samsung and DX100 including dynaudio internal memory card (albeit limited to 320 bit rate). This makes a difference to me as I use this fairly regularly. After hearing the AK120 I still can't let go of the sound even after a few days with the DX100. Have you experimented with the EQ settings? Enjoy.

I use the '"pro" setting sometimes but mostly leave the sound neutral. My AK 120 sounds even better now that I've used it about a month. Unfortunately my dealer has let me use a pair of AKG 3003's for a few days. This is an unbelievable sounding as well as an unbelievably expensive combo.

What changed? Harsh tannins gradually giving way to a softer mouthfeel?

Definitely not a mouth feel but you could liken it to your wine analogy, very astute and witty. I can't get enough and as soon as my new AKG 3003's arrive I think I will have the ultimate in a carry around music system, at least until something better comes along. This will be good enough for me for a long, long time though. I'd post some pictures if i could figure out how to do it.

I am so archaic. Pair of 39$ RHA MA350 and iPod shuffle 1G (512MB) and totally happy apart from the awful cloth cable of the RHA earphone. But I like that there are a new niche of nicely made, rather compact high end players out there.
