Default Sansa Clip Zip and album artwork.

Hi,
I'm currently waiting for delivery of Clip Zip and I got question regarding album artwork and the player.

Most of my music is in ogg format (lancer encoder based on aoTuv to be more precise), and we all know that there are problems with embedding artwork into ogg files, so my question is, does Clip Zip reads art form tag or if can read form "folder.jpg" or "cover.jpg" inside folder?

I know that RockBox can read from folder.jpg, but I would like to now if OF can do the same.

Thanks in advance.

In the times I've used Vorbis files in the OF the only way the AA would show up was using a folder.jpg in the same folder as the music file. Embedded AA worked sometimes in other codecs. Sometimes it didn't. A baseline, not progressive, folder.jpg smaller than 500x500 pixels and less than 100 kB worked every time so I stopped using embedded AA altogether.

You'll want to check the battery life using Vorbis files in the OF. I didn't check on the CZ but when I tried it on other sandisk players using Vorbis cut battery life by as much as half. It's not a hardware problem. The better optimized Rockbox decoder actually gives slightly better battery life than mp3 using the same files.

When I first got the Zip, my Vorbis runtime was 9 hours 15 minutes...

OK, latest (and last) round of battery life numbers. I converted nine Judas Priest FLAC albums to Q5 Ogg Vorbis....4 albums on internal memory, 5 albums on external memory. Avg. bitrate according to foobar....157kbps. Other conditions were as before....ReplayGain engaged with no pregain, shuffle and repeat all on, volume approx. two-thirds. Runtime.....nine hours, 15 minutes.

Hey, it works that's great news. Resizing covers will be a bit time-consuming but an easy thing to do. Oh and I would worry about battery life with vorbis, because i not travelling any far, so there will be always opportunity to recharge Zip.

And besides maybe Sansa will do something with vorbis and battery life in next firmware if it just a software issue.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a firmware update to improve battery life. The AAC decoder has been broken from day one and has never been fixed so it works with files longer than ~10-12 minutes. Considering the number of iTunes users that have been turned off due to that it doesn't seem likely that the much fewer vorbis users will ever see an improvement.

Well, maybe i will consider RockBox, i will see about that. Thank you both for quick answer. I will post my results with battery life, wonder how it will turn out.

Ok, so I think thread can be closed.

So, I was testing out Clip Zip with various forms of artwork resizing, compressing, etc. and I figure out the best way (IMO) to deal with covers:

- size 96 x 96 (when i was using more than 96 x 96, pictures were looking really pixelated)

- 100 compression quality, in other words no compression.

- I use FastStone Image for resizing and there was option to use lanczos2 filter which gives you a bit sharper image, and it really worked.

Unfortunately, there is quite a problem with embedded artwork, either it doesn't show up or it looks like crap.

I haven't used the sandisk firmware much but iirc it displays one of a number of fallback images that are part of the sandisk firmware. Those are just some type of uninspiring (I'm avoiding saying ugly) that patterns fill the space so it's not just a blank.

I quickly learned not to concern myself with the album art display on a Clip Zip. The screen is about the cheapest I've ever seen on any DAP I've ever owned. It doesn't much matter what you do the quality of the screen just isn't up to making a AA display look good. For me it was good enough to use as a at a glance reference but that's about it.

I finally decided to strip all the AA and use the Clock Lock2 Zip theme that doesn't display AA at all. The space I saved dumping all of the folder.jpg files wasn't a lot but I probably picked up enough space for another song or two.

The text-only theme that I settled on for the Clip Zip is Ekaran. It has beautiful, easy to read font and a simplified layout that's near perfection (for me).

That's the same theme I use most of the time, but I didn't bother removing my album art, since I use my files on other players that do display art well.

I use the runner 96x96. Imo it looks much neater.
