Triosphere - Onwards - 2007

First album from these guys. I've had Road Less Traveled (2010) for quite awhile now and really like it. Psyched to hear about a new album coming out this year. This one's expectedly a little less polished than the 2nd one but not horribly so. It's a pretty good effort, and Ida Haukland still shines through.

Black Label Society - Doom Troopin' Live - 2010

Pretty wild show from Zakk & company (main program). There's other extras I haven't gotten to though.

Sound is pretty good, but it all starts to blend together. Luckily there's a short acoustic break in the middle. Probably would have been disappointed if I would have been in the crowd as Zakk spends an inordinate time facing his row of beers instead of towards them.

A Sound Of Thunder - Out of the Darkness - 2012

Another female fronted metal act that came from the amazon recommendation pile. Seems stylistically a little over the map, but a lot of it seems very Black Sabbathy. I like it a lot on the first couple of listens. May go back and see what the older stuff is like, but the path forward looks pretty bright.

review by Gregory Heaney

Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt and Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson bring their prog powers as a duo on the self-titled debut of their new project, Storm Corrosion. Longtime admirers and musical collaborators, with Wilson acting as producer on some of Opeth's groundbreaking albums and Åkerfeldt appearing on some Porcupine Tree tracks, it was only a matter of time before these two made the jump from guests to co-conspirators on a new musical venture.

The end product is something altogether different from what fans of either band might expect, moving away from the rock and metal of the pair's main gigs in favor of a more flowing and expansive folk-touched sound. These spacious musical boundaries give the album a beautiful, dreamlike feeling as it drifts from track to track with a measured pace that shows off the highly refined songwriting ability being put to use on the record.

Given the nature of their earlier collaborations, fans diving into Storm Corrosion expecting a sequel to Blackwater Park are going to be disappointed as they unexpectedly hit the shallow end of the pool, but even though the album doesn't sound much like the metal masterpiece, that doesn't make it unworthy of a listener's attention, and anyone open-minded enough to approach the project without any expectations will be quickly swept off into the spacious perennial twilight created by these two master craftsmen.

Cinder Road - Damage Control - 2010

I really dug the first cd Superhuman, a pretty damn good Enuff Z'nuffian-like effort, but they were 1 and done with EMI. I thought this was Japan only, but Mike Ruocco's got it for sale on his website. Only had a couple of "spins" but it seems to be a good follow up with maybe a slight more modern tinge.

Packaging note: It's not entirely clear that this isn't the Japanese copy from his website (and it's not). But it's all 13 tracks, looks like a properly pressed cd, multi-colored insert with all the lyrics.

Edguy - F***ing With Fire - 2009

2006 concert in Sao Paulo with a great mix of tracks from the meat of the bell curve era. Sound is really good and it's not overly hyper on the video side. Some extras yet to go, but enjoyed the main show.

Pink Cream 69 - Ceremonial - 2013

It's been almost 6 long years since In10sity. I've had this for a couple of weeks now, and it's been growing on me, but doesn't strike me as a great album. I'm sure it's unavoidable based on their tenure but there's a couple of riffs that seem extremely familiar to their previous works. It still ranks in the really good category, but pales in comparison to a few of the earlier ones. Bonus track upside/downside is there isn't any deluxe or Japanese songs not included here, but they're normally as good as the rest of the album.

Babe Ruth - Black Dog, from their First Base album, sung by Janita Jenny Haan
Take a look the way she dances in this video. Her pipes are nice as well. Reminds me of a female Robert Plant.

Time to break out the album again.

All the tunes from Aerosmith's prime years, when they were all still on drugs. No sellout tunes here!

Never owned this before, but it was $2.99 on Amazon so I figured I would broaden my horizons.

Fools For Rowan - Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. - 2010

I'm not sure where I picked up on these guys, but it's a great disc. The vocal harmonies are fantastic. They even have an endorsement from Lizzy Hale on their website. Only problem is it's too short, and the remix at the end I could do without. I might get the EP and throw them together to make a 16 track album.

Packaging Note: Amazon's version is supposedly CD-R but I'm assuming I got a (used) copy through amazon from their website, as it looks like a properly pressed cd in a jewel case. No lyrics though.

Jettblack - Raining Rock - 2012

Kick ass 80's style hard rock/metal. Really digging the choruses. Just a fun time all around, although again the last track doesn't offer much (a repeat of track 2 with UDO being the extra).

S.U.N. - Something Unto Nothing - 2013

~20 years ago Sass Jordan released two kick ass albums (racine and rats), and then she lost her rocker mojo. I kept waiting for a return to form and this is a great step in the right direction. Much harder than all of her solo releases in the interim, but still lacking a little in the groove department.
