Hey guys,
I have 2 Clip+'s, but say I'd like to fool around with Rockbox and thus get one or a few other players off eBay. What would be the cheapest ones? Something workable of course

Looking at the full list of the Rockbox ports http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/TargetSt...ently_Under_De I don't see anything cheaper than the Clip+. If you find something on ebay cheaper just check the port status. If it's not listed there's no Rockbox port available.

I'm using RB on mine of course, just wondered if there's anything else. (Yeah I know the RB list of ports, but haven't really searched eBay for all of them yet.)

Clip+ or clipzip. If you want cheap high capacity then go with what I have: an iPod video 5.5G. That's around $100 on average. If you'd like a bit more capacity and more modern hardware get a 160gb iPod classic (around $150 used @gamestop) and head over to " freemyipod.org " and use their method to Rockbox it.

Nah I really just wanted a cheap toy to play with. Nothing serious. I thought there's maybe some small old Creative or Philips player I missed. Guess not then.
But you know DarkSide, the iPod with a hard drive isn't such a bad idea. I really the iPods with the touchwheel, wanted to get the Nano 5G back in the day but I would never cope with lack of memory card and the need of external software (I have a company-issued iOS device and I really hate this). But a rockboxed HDD iPod sounds pretty good. |

There's no longer a need to use iTunes with an iPod, there hasn't been for quite some time. Only, I believe, you might need it in the beginning. Once everything is set up you can use quite a few different programs to sync. It's only drag & drop with Rockbox installed,...but I have way to much music to do it that way. & I like playlists, and I create them in iTunes (Genius is, amazingly, excellent). I personally prefer music management software, and I wish I could use iTunes with all my devices. It's way better than the Zune software I need for my Lumia 900.

I use CopyTransManager myself, but it's still not as straightforward as just copying the files via xyz Commander. I prefer to browse music via folders and not artist etc. (I name my folders and files so that they're easy to identify anyway).
Anyway I almost figured out what I want: iPod Mini. Just pop a CompactFlash card inside (I have a few), Rockbox and there it is. Why didn't I think of that before? Too bad the head-fi reports it sounds bad Guess I'll have to go for something newer after all. But if I'd just want something to play with, this isn't a bad idea.

I also have an iPod mini, 32gb compact flash card, Rockboxed. Nice little player,...I stopped using mine all that much tho. I have too many others things that take my attention away. Plus my inline controls don't work with it - I hate that!!!
And, regardless of what's claimed on head-fi, the sq of a Rockboxed iPod mini is excellent. And yes, I just used it a few days ago.

Why not gift it to somebody then, even without the card

I accept offers via PM. Check out my feedback,...and it's complete or not at all. The card comes with it.

I'm just going to get one with a dead battery and either replace it or use the external power pack, but thanks
