Default Is Nokia working on a Windows 8 tablet? Maybe, but it won’t be announced soon

Some people had hoped that Nokia would unveil its oft-rumored Windows 8 tablet at the company’s joint event with Microsoft this morning. This, however, was not the case. The entire event focused solely on Nokia’s upcoming Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 Windows Phones and a few select Windows Phone 8 features. But while we didn’t get a tablet announcement, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop hinted at the possibility of a Nokia Windows 8 tablet down the road.

Speaking to ABC news, Elop noted that while Nokia has not made any announcements, the company is seriously considering manufacturing a Windows 8 tablet.

“We have not announced any tablets, but I think the opportunity is very clear. People today increasingly are looking for a common digital experience between their smartphone and tablet, with a PC, and with their gaming platform, and so there’s clearly an opportunity across there. This is something that we’re looking at very closely.”

The October 26 release of Windows 8 is drawing near, and Nokia is running out of time if it plans to have a device out alongside everyone else. But if I had to guess, we probably won’t see a Nokia tablet until mid-to-late 2013. And with Microsoft entering the market with the Surface, it might be wise for the Finnish manufacturer to wait a few months before launching its first-ever tablet.

Do you think Nokia will release a Windows 8 tablet? And, if so, would you buy one?
