Samsung’s flash memory is now four times faster

Samsung Electronics is looking to speed up the flash memory found on smartphones and tablets with its new Samsung Embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC) Pro Class 1500 NAND chips. This ultra-fast embedded memory is four times faster than existing eMMC solutions, which will result in much better performance on mobile devices.

This flash memory can read at a speed of 140MB/s (3,500 inputs per second) and write at a speed of 50MB/s (1,500 outputs per second). The chips won’t be sold directly to consumers, but manufacturers like Samsung, Apple, and others will be able to include them in new devices in the 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB variety.

I, for one, am very excited to have faster memory in upcoming smartphones and tablets, as it will dramatically speed up everyday tasks. Now, if only we could get every manufacturer to include the 64GB flash memory chip in high-end devices… right?

If I was Samsung, I would not sell it to Apple for use in their devices...

It would be a bumpy few years for Samsung, and that is assuming that they either break Apple or sales of their phones pick up enough to replace the what I'm sure is a great source of income before they really feel the pain.

Samsung already last quarter sold more than double (~53 million units) the amount of smartphones than Apple (~22 million units). So vast majority of the their mobile profits are already coming from their own units.

What you have to remember is that these companies are not feverious fanboys. They're going to do what makes economic sense. Apple will keep buying from Samsung as long as Sammy keeps offering the components they want at the best price and if Sammy is able to produce x number of components in desired amount of time. For a lot of components like nem flash, processors, display technology, Samsung is a powerhouse and nothing going to change that for a quite while.
