I have a Sony surround system with a USB input that read my Zen Stone ok. I plugged in the Sansa Clip+ and it failed to read. I just wanted to play the music/podcasts through the system. Is this not possible ?

What USB setting do you have on your Clip+?
I am guessing that it needs to be set to MSC for the stereo to read the player. How are you connecting USB to USB, or headphone out to Aux-in or headphone out to RCA twin plugs? Steve

As I said, via USB. Set to MSC.

Its possible it gets confused by the second drive. If you put an SD card in, does it recognize the files on the SD card?

There's a setting under General Settings>System> USB Hide Internal Drive that was put there to prevent some external players from being confused by seeing two drives. Setting that might help if that's the problem.
Edit: Now that I checked I see that won't work. It hides the Internal drive not the external memory. If you don't have a card to put in there it won't do you any good.

If it does not work that way you can always connect to stereo using the headphone jack

But my Zen Stone used to work ok and it's the same type of player. Why should I need a card ?

The same reason the Hide Internal Drive setting was added. Some systems have problems when they see multiple drives and can't read them.
There's no guarantee your system will be able to work over USB even if you add a card and hide the internal drive. It may work so it's what I would try. Get an inexpensive card and give it a shot. If one setting doesn't work then I'd try the other. The worst that can happen is you gain some more storage.

Ok, I now have a memory card inside as suggested here but my USB insert on my Sony surround DVD player does not recognize the clip in any mode. It had no problem with my Zen Stone.

Are you running rockbox or the sandisk firmware?

By Chance did you do a firmware update? if so you have to reset to MSC mode

I think the SD card comments above were specifically about using Rockbox. I don't think adding an SD card and then continuing to use the sandisk firmware will do anything. The suggestion was that using the rockbox option to disable the internal storage and just mount the SD card might work around a bug in your stereo that prevents it from working with USB devices that have multiple disks.
