![]() The Samsung Galaxy S III is a great device, but developers and enthusiasts on Verizon quickly discovered that the phone’s bootloader could not be unlocked, unlike the nearly identical versions of the handset on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. Samsung, however, is hoping to rectify this problem with the Galaxy S III Developer Edition. The Samsung Galaxy S III Developer Edition, available only for Verizon’s network, contains a bootloader which can be unlocked by the user, opening the door for numerous opportunities for customization. The device will only be sold through Samsung’s developer website (developer.samsung.com) for $599. Samsung, of course, notes that the company cannot provide support for devices which have been modified from their original configuration (e.g. those with unlocked bootloaders) should something disastrous occur. If you already have a Galaxy S III on Verizon, there’s not much you can do aside from buying a new Developer Edition handset. But if you haven’t yet jumped on the Galaxy S III bandwagon and are willing to pay full price, this device is a nice alternative to the stock Verizon handset. Do you think the Samsung Galaxy S III Developer Edition is worth the extra cost? Or should Verizon have just released the device with an unlockable bootloader like everyone else? This. While I'm happy with their actual phone service, Verizon's business practices are crap for consumers. The entire US wireless industry needs a major overhaul, IMO.
