Well it's been near a year now since Sony updated their main line of players, anybody heard rumors about a refresh in the next few months?

Nothing, the Z Series is the latest. But, is it a year old? I don't think so,...

The A series just came out last fall, and I think the Z is newer than that. But the S and E series, I don't know.

wow feels like it's been longer. Too bad there aren't any rumors going right now about what might be coming out...
A new A-series or Z-series would definitely be welcomed. |

I doubt the mp3 player market is very important to them anymore.

Sony doesn't do updates.
Sony doesn't give a F^#k about consumers outside of Japan. Sony will offer the same o same o in a different wrapper. If Sony offers anything it will be in the fall for X-mas season likely. If you own a Sony player that is anything but a E series be happy and live with it until it crapps out All I need is another 8/16 GB player ![]() Sony is not going to give you anything you really want. They are still pissed at the world for stealing music via Mp3.Great players but behind the times |

Actually, Sony does care about one other market besides Japan, and that's the EU. They get 32 & 64 GB players, ..the rest of us can go to hell.

I don't find anything wrong with my E series Sonys. I drop music into them, they play reliably, done deal. As far as firmware updates I much prefer the Sony philosophy to sandisk.
If you get it right the first time you don't need to issue continuous updates. There may not be any added bells and whistles but what you have when you walk out the store works reliably and you know just what to expect. To my way of thinking that's better than waiting for some vaporware update to fix a bug that shouldn't exist in the first place.

I had one Sony for about a year, and I think in that time there was only one firmware update....and I don't even know what it was supposed to address, because the player worked just fine before and after. So Skip's got a point about getting it right the first time.

Sorry all E series fans. Recently the E series have (DSEE, Clear Stereo/Bass, and other sound treatments) that were only available in the A series and sometimes S series. These older players are what I am refering to. The E series is a good player I won't argue with you on that. I really like the DSEE and Dynamic Enhancer features on the A series. The player really sings with these treatments.
I don't know about recent Z,A,or S series. My last Sony is a NWZ S639F player which replace a A-816 that got lost. Which I am using as much as my Clip+. I have completly given up on SGP as a headphone unit. I did look at the new Sony players today but not enough to where I would buy one. I still have and HD-5 that works just fine. |

You know, just to play the devil's advocate here, Sony really did seem to listen to consumers' responses to the Z's form factor and create a more pocketable and comfortable to hold device.
now yes, lack of SD card, limited sizes in the US all suck but they're also to be expected from Sony. Anyone know screen resolution on this? |

Looking at the pictures of the new S-Series and E-Series on the CNET website, it looks like they've reverted back to the flat buttons they used on the players before current E-Series player (where they added a slightly raised ridge around the buttons). For me, it's a strong disincentive to consider either player since I found that button layout virtually unusable.

I quite like the beige, tan? E series, if it was available in 32Gb I'd buy one.
