ATH-M50 vs HD598

My friend has a Sennheiser HD598, but is not pleased with it since he prefers more bass since he mostly listen to rap and hip hop. I recently bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 and is moderately satisfied with it since it's v-shaped and I prefer a more balanced headphones since I listen to every genres. I also prefer a headphones with large airy soundstage.

Now my friend and I are contemplating to straight up trade the HD598 for the ATH-M50. I would like to get your opinion on whether this is a fair trade for both of us. I greatly appreciate any input.

Well, as I'm sure you could tell from google, the Senn's cost a bit more. So pricewise, it probably isn't "fair".

But I think fair is if you both feel you like the other phone better. If he likes the M50s more than the Senns, good for him, and vice versa, good for you. I suggest doing a sort of trial period. Trade for a week or two and see if you actually like the Senns better.

I guess I could do a trial period, but it will have to be longer than a week because my friend will be going on a business trip for a month at the end of the week.

As for whether it's a fair trade, he bought the HD598 when it was under $170, and I'm throwing in the velour earpads for the ATH-M50 to make it fairer.

If you are okay with both and his headphones are the more expensive ones I'd let him be the final judge. Give him both to trial for a week and have him return the pair he likes less at the end of the week. No hard feelings, and if there are, well it's on him.

The difference in value is not huge so my guess is you'll both come out ahead with a straight swap, as opposed to trying to sell them and then purchase the new ones you want. You lose money every time you do a trade in anyway.

Also consider if one set is significantly older than the other that might also influence things.
