This seems crazy. What if a very heavy person joins, then loses plenty of weight. Will he get kicked out? If so, will he get a refund for the unused portion of his membership? I wonder how long it will take for these gyms to get sued for discrimination?

Meh.
A) Being around a bunch of fat fucks is not conductive to weight loss B) This is probably grounds for a civil discrimination lawsuit C) This makes business sense. They are locking out the the less profitable "peppy gym rats", who use the facilities actively, in favor of the more lucrative customers who don't do much even when they are around. Also desperate people will pay more for empty promises, dietary supplements, protein shakes and other useless feel-good junk. |

Actually, it's a great idea. No different than women-only gyms that "ban" men because they intimidate many women who are either just starting out or are mainly trying to lose weight.

For coed gyms it is way different. I am naturally thin but work out to maintain strength due to an old back injury. what if I was thin and wanted to bulk up? I would be prime for all those high profit supplements that sideways mentioned, more so than overweight people probably. For men you are losing a large part of your potential clientele. For women only gyms, sure, because thats the prime reason women go to gym, to lose weight. I rarely see fat guys at the gym. mostly average, skinny, or gym rats. Oh, and those thin guys? usually don't go much either because they are intimidated and worried about looking weak in front of the gym rats. I use weights at home and only do cardio at the gym honestly. Even then I would rather play basketball outside or swim for my cardio so I really hit the gym about once a week even though I exercise 5-6 times a week. basically rainy days, late nights, or at lunch.

I don't mind gyms that cater to different kinds of clientele. This is invariably the case anyway. Spec your gym a certain way and you will attract a certain kind of crowd. There are the fat camps filled with cardio machines aimed at weight loss, there are the recreational gyms with spotless machines and saunas aimed at the networking executive, the muscle smörgåsbord filled with free weights, gymnastics gyms.... ad nausea.
My problem stems from the exclusivity based on appearance. To actively ban people based on physical appearance is MEH. You can't refuse to serve a black man/ woman/ fat guy in a shop based on said attributes, correct me if I am wrong. I should be allowed to go give pole dancing a twirl if I feel so inclined and petit plump women should be allowed to come try out powerlifting. For the record I have never seen a gym that actively enforced some arbitrary gender policy. IDvsEGO has a point about the thin guy wanting to bulk up, he is another prime target for selling stuff to. |
