I have a Clip+ and was wondering if plugging the earbuds in when I use it and taking them out when I store them will wear out the 3.5 jack over the long run. I have a case that came with a pair of MeElectronics that the Clip+ fits in perfectly but I use a set of Jbuds J2 and they have a straight plug and have to bend the wire to make it fit so I unplug them. I use my clip+ everyday at work.

As long as you're gentle when inserting/removing the plug, I think it will be fine. It's side-to-side tension on the plug that can cause it to fail, I think.

You always want to remove the plug from the jack when you store it, if you don't then you will short out the cable on your headphones near the plug.

No matter how gentle or care you take, everything wares out over time. That said, I still have my original Clip v1 headphone jack working fine but it does feel loser than the day I got it. If I’m going to use my gear several times during a day, I leave mine connected but do disconnect before storing at the end of day. I keep my IEMs in their own case and in each case I keep a pack of desiccant. Also I regularly clean my tips, IEMs and monitors like this.
Edit: BTW according to wiki, the Sansa Clip v1 was released on October 9, 2007, so I have 2 that are around 4 years old

After many years (is it 5+ now? wow--how time flies, much too quickly!), I don't have any issue with my original Clip and its headphone jack, still in use.
