RIM discontinues 16GB PlayBook tablet

Well this is rather interesting. News has reached us that RIM has discontinued the 16GB variety of its PlayBook tablet. It is not issuing a recall, as HP chose to do with the Touch Pad, so you can still pick one up if you so desire. The following statement was given to Engadget by RIM:

“RIM will no longer be making the 16GB model of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The 16GB PlayBook will continue to be available for distributors and retailers while quantities last. We continue to remain committed to the tablet space and the 32GB and 64GB models of the BlackBerry PlayBook continue to be available from our distributors and retailers around the world. There is more value for our customers in the higher capacity models (32GB, 64GB), and as such we have decided to focus our efforts here.”

It strikes me that if your company is falling apart due—at least in part—to outdated hardware, getting rid of your highest-quality and yet also most budget-friendly item is not in the company's best interest. Does anybody else agree? Granted, the 32GB and 64GB versions will still be made, and most people want more space when possible—I know I do. But by that same token, I would venture to say that “most people” also want to spend as little as humanly possible, and are more than willing to reuse an old SD card—again, I know I am. Does anybody else feel the same way? Thoughts, anyone?

They were making new playbooks? I thought they were selling off the ones that didn't sell at $400 + dollars.

They don't need to make anymore because there are huge, massive reservoirs of unsold 16Gb Playbooks.

I still see places selling playbooks at the original prices, as if they neer heard of the price cut.

Yeah, spending $900 for the 64 GB model at one place, while another has them for $400. I wonder how well that's been working for those stores.

They're not going to get rid of them at that price, that's for sure.

Yeah it doesn't seem to make sense ,i only popped for one because they were 199$ . Its fine for me for couch surfing and i just use one of the apps to stream from my laptop. I realize its only 16GB and just treat it as such. I think RIM is too late to the party especially when Samsung is launching its new Galaxy and Apple's iphone 5 is just around the corner.Time will tell.
