Supposedly the 4.2 don't play games as good as the 4.0/5.0

Someone is saying on Youtube that the 4.2 won't run games as good as the older devices. I'm not sure how true that is, but I seen a video of AskTheAndroidGuy and he was playing GTA III and it was lagging quite a bit. So now I'm unsure which to get now.

The pros for the 4.0 for me would be the super clear LCD screen, and good for playing games. While the pros for the 4.2 would be the better speakers, a bit bigger screen, & it's more likely to get ICS.

Edit: I just sent AskTheAndroidGuy about it, and I'll see what he says. I also asked about which one is better for the internet browser, since I would be using it a lot.

Another pro for 4.2 is the 1500mA battery.

Another thing to consider is if the 4.2 uses the Wolfson wm8994 DAC or not, as it has great audio quality, especially when paired with Voodoo.

At first I thought that guy's comments were wrong, but maybe he is right. He said that the 4.2 uses an SGX530 GPU, which is slower than the 540 in the GP 4.0/5.0. This explains the laggy games- that commenter on YouTube said he played several games on the 4.2 that were laggy compared to the 4.0.

For me, pros for the 4.2 would be the speakers, the better design, and the slightly larger display in comparison to the 4.0 (I cannot stand the pixelation on the 5.0's display). But the slow GPU is the dealbreaker for me. Looks like I will be waiting for the next Player model.

You don't think GTA III would lag on the other ones? They are all single core you know.

I don't know who this "someone" is, but AskTheAndroidGuy himself was actually pretty positive about the capabilities, all things considered.

Again, this is single core. If you expect it to be as powerful as well as a dual or quad, you need to reconsider.

Maybe you do not, but I used it in store and immediately saw a very noticeable amount of pixelation.

So does anyone really know yet if the SGP 4.0 and 5.0 are better than the SGP 4.2 in terms of processing, graphics, camera, and etc? And its not based on speculation or websites like cnet, engadget, gizmodo, and slashgear

I understand that, but I think a device in 2012 should be able to play a game that came out in 2001. I'm really unsure now which to get. I have to decide basically whether I want the better sound & the bigger screen or the clearer screen & playing a more variety of games without lag. The camera I could careless about, since I already have a device for that so the 4.2 having a worse one is indifferent to me.

Processing, both are about the same. But the 4.0 and 5.0 are better at graphics- the 4.2 has an SGX530 GPU compared to the 4.0/5.0's 540.

Camera is also better on the 4.0/5.0. The 4.2 has slightly worse clarity and is fixed focus. But really, camera should not be a deciding factor for the purchase of any of these.

One other thing is that the 4.0 has a Super Clear LCD while the 4.2 has a normal LCD.

Dang it Samsung why didn't you put a better processor, graphics, and camera into the SGP 4.2. I like the bigger screen, front dual speakers, and redesign but the guts of the device is the same even alittle worse then the older galaxy players. Does that mean that they are going to release better SGPs in the coming months and these are just the lower end models???
I also called Samsung Customer Service to find out what type of processor it uses but they had no information about it for the SGP 4.2

In-store demos should be taken with a grain of salt. The device may have been abused by people, and better to try it out with your own media on it. Mine plays 720p videos quite nicely.

I think at this moment i'm actually leaning towards the 4.0. There's really no excuse at all for why the GPU in the 4.2 should be weaker.

It has PowerVR sgx530. The galaxy wifi 4.0 has a sgx540.
What I still don't know is whether it has a Wolfson DAC.

But seriously what is Samsung's deal? Instead of making things better they bring new products on the market which are a downgrade.
e.g. the Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100G is clearly weaker than the I9000 but just some bucks cheaper.
And why they didn't build the Wolfson DAC into the S2 and the Galaxy S Plus I9001?
The Galaxy wifi 4.2 is lighter, has a bigger screen and front speakers. That's it. The rest is worser or just the same as the old wifi 4.0. And it costs ~30€ more.

I think Samsung wants to trick noob customers.

I won't be playing 3D games, so for me first priority is a replaceable battery and good web browsing experience.

4.2 has 1500mA so that is 20% more. If I add my spare then I get 40% more online time compare to the same setup of 4.0

Bad news is the 4.2 is nowhere to be found in Canada. Staples just started to carry 4.0 and 5.0

People using the device is not, and is never going to, lower the physical resolution of the display. It is 800x480 pixels on a 5" panel with about 180ppi, which is low enough to see pixels. Using my own media is not going to increase the physical display resolution/density.

The videos you are viewing may have been rendered in 720p, but they play in the device's actual resolution- 800x480. It scales down.

I agree with everyone else, I see no reason Samsung cut these corners other than for price, but I would not mind paying a bit more to keep some of those specs. Now I will not be getting either the 4.0 or 4.2.

if anyone is in canada and trying to buy the 4.2, I bought mine from the US and got it the next day from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...layer_4_2.html the total cost was 248$ though, so if you canadians really wanted one there is an option. (from ontario)

Seems a bit cynical but I think you are right and this is exactly what it boils down to. You only have to look at the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 which has also just been released to see this is precisely what they are doing; cutting corners to get the price down to make for a more attractively priced product.

Now I will not be getting either the 4.0 or 4.2.

Add to the mix Samsung's clear lack of commitment to post-sales software improvement and that is a reasonable response (and this is coming from someone who has an SGP 4.0 and likes it.)
