So I finally had a chance to run a little personal research project. Since WD-40 is just a boatload of alkanes I decided to run something else.
So I got myself a bottle of Deoxit and injected it though a GC/MS. Test conditions: Instrument: HP 6890N with 6890 injector. Column: Phenomenex Zebron ZB-5ms Detector: Agilent Technogies 5793 Mass Selective Detector Instrument conditions: Inlet Split 50:1, 250°C; Column init temp 50°C hold 5 min, 10°C/min to 250°C hold 10 min; Carrier gas Helium, 26cm/s per Van Deemter optimal Detector conditions: Evaluated mass 50 - 500 M, eluent hold 2.00 min, scan 3.75/s After a few moments, out came this thing: Selection_050.png ChemSpider info. Per the trade name OS-124, this is a lubricant. However after some more moments out came a bunch of cyclic siloxanes with 3, 4, 5 and 6 silicons. Such siloxanes are also used in lubricants but I am uncertain whether these compounds are genuine (from the Deoxit) or are produced by column backbiting. Maybe both are true since by the end, I did see the baseline rising. Anyway, presuming that the siloxanes are indeed from the Deoxit. That would mean Deoxit is only a lubricant and not a reducing agent. However the reducing agents might have not reached the MSD (i.e. jammed in the liner) yet we do not have a normal-phase LC/MS to verify this idea. Does anyone else know anything about Deoxit?

What is your main goal here really? Science for fun or?
WD-40 is a masterpiece imo, works for practically everything! |

Got any other commercial products with a "proprietary" formula? How about Brasso? I wanted to try Ronsonol Fuel Oil but that's mostly (96-98%) petroleum distillates, i.e. nothing interesting to see, I suspect.

Since the name of the product is "Deoxit" I suspect there is a reducing agent. Wanted to find that. Only saw that OS-124 and a bunch of siloxanes of unknown origin. I sure hope I didn't scrap my $1000 column (actually about 500 bucks really).

Basically, It's a cleaning & lubricating agent.

That "lubrication" part I get. What I get not is the "cleaning" part. Maybe the isopropanol does that job but I fail to see how any of the components in Deoxit can actually reverse oxidation. Don't tell me it's the freaking siloxanes.
EDIT: Also, the "you are weird" part? I do not disagree.

Your expertise seem to be extremely sharp... and when it's sharp, it's also narrow.. Don't be surprised if you can't find anyone here who can truly appreciate your work.
A little vulgarization would be nice.

It's not about appreciation. The reason why I list all my test conditions is for someone else, with a different (or better) setup to further analyze this Deoxit as to either confirm or refute my findings here. Or someone more experienced than me can propose some changes so I may run again. This may also be a good excuse to try a Supelco column. ...Anyway my two points here are:

Look, go join Chemical Forums and be done with it: http://www.chemicalforums.com/
Really,...this topic here on a portable audio forum is asinine.

It is,...but it has it's limitations. You can post, but be glad the true thread derailers haven't bothered to show up. It's all downhill from there. Funny, but downhill,...

^ Well it doesn't really bother me anyway. Most of my posts anywhere (not just here on ABi) get derailed sooner or later. But thanks for the suggestion, really.

The forum I linked to above is more towards the subject matter this thread is geared to. You're better off posting certain things in their prospective forums,... Sometimes a subject really can be too "off topic".

^ Right, someone bring six pints of beer, one pound of baked beens, one anemometer and one very brave test subject!
