AT&T is picking up a little speed with its 4G LTE rollout, adding three more markets this weekend. Unfortunately, this is not the 12-market mass rollout that we have been hoping for, but we can probably still expect to see the other nine later this month. Bloomington, Indiana; Bryan-College Station in Texas; and Muncie, Indiana will all get AT&T LTE this Sunday, April 8.
A canned statement was the same for all three press releases, from two different people, so I’m dubious that anybody actually said this, but here it is nonetheless. “We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Bloomington [Muncie; Bryan-College Station] responds to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, on the best devices,”
An equally canned message informed us that AT&T intends to expand in these states/markets “over the coming months,” providing us with no real clue as to when or where the next market rollout or expansion will hit. It’s kind of like a game, really—something along the lines of Bop-It.
Does anybody here own a 4G LTE device in these markets, or any of AT&T’s markets, for that matter? I almost feel as if AT&T could have done well to hold off on LTE for another 6 months, and then awe us all with one massive 75 market initial launch. After all, AT&T has HSPA+, which is all the vast majority of its customers are using right now, if they’re using any form of 4G. Anybody else think AT&T could have landed a truckload of new subscribers by doing one mega-launch instead of these mini-launches, or is this really best for the customers? Who out there has seen a benefit from these scattered local launches?
