There’s not much if any discernible difference to the human ear with top tier digital audio players like those. Where you will find the difference is in the audio enhancement tools and player features. So you’re best off going with the one that will do the functions you prefer and buy the best headphones or IEMs you can afford, better phones will make a bigger difference IMHO.

any cowon will leave you in awe with its sound quality. WalkGood is right; it eventually comes down to the earphones you have. If you do only care about sound, then I would go with a small player like the Cowon E2 or similar. Check out cowonamerica.com.

You misinterpreted what was said. A Cowon with the sound enhancements off sounds much the P3 or the J3, very good. If a person is awed by a Cowon, they will be equally awed by the Samsung or the Sansa.

What makes Cowons preferable to some in sound quality is their EQ and BBE effects. There's others that aren't fond of those effects so the Cowon isn't their preference.

What WalkGood did say you should take to heart. The difference in sound quality between volume matched, quality players is too small to be the reason to buy one or the other. The differences in features, which includes the audio effects, is what makes enough of a difference to prefer one over the other. The best way to get better sound quality is to improve your headphones.
