Starter Tips For a Galaxy Player 4 User (Also Gingerbread?)

hi! i just subscribed!
just wanted to know if theres any stable Gingerbread Upgrade for my Samsung Galaxy Player or if there's any upside in rooting it, and any basic usefull apps i should have (i'm a newbie) (BTW its the version with a physical center button, not a touch one)
