Default I'm back with some news

Hello ,

I resumed development about a week ago and finished today a kernel driver for the keypad. I was able to change the folder in rockbox (which now is running without R0 app )

The key mapping is not 100% done, a recent rockbox version needs to be compiled, USB doesn't work without r0 app etc.

so there's still plenty of work to be done but we're getting closer, stay tuned

Max

i have an idea for mgue and lorenz about the framebuffer support, we might be able to compile all the crap needed for sdl as an module, same goes for the mxc cpu govenor driver. however we would get rid of the kernel standby bug.

Here I am..back
After a beautiful holiday hehe

So for the framebuffer module: yes we must do it so. Otherwise the bug is really annoying and it's very strange....

EDIT: are there some news while I was away??

In the spare time I'm trying to help to port rockbox. So far I finally fixed the keypad: I can now surf in rb menus
BUT everything is to be implemented and unfortunately SDL audio (alsa driver) doesn't work; rb SDL audio bindings should be fine because using dummy device no crashes at all.
There are lot's of things to do, but I will sooner or later be able to prepare a correct rom with safe mode etc to make other people working on it possibly!

EDIT: now power button works. I and lebellium are improving key mappings. Still no audio

Ahaha lol
Mgue and I are debugging this...
In the meanwhile, here a shot of an RB's game (don't criticise my photo skills - lebellium - took in 1 second, no time to loose haha). Maybe you can do some more screens better

EDIT: forgot to say. Please don't ask for betas, we are still in beginning. When things will be running a bit better, we will release everything
The main problem is that for now a new firmware with a new kernel is needed, that causes some issues for now (no safe mode + backlight bug on original r0 application). So be quiet

I'm proud to say that right now I'm listening something in RB
Indeed it's still a bit hacked and we have just SW software for now (hey of course we will implement as3543 codec management)
Sound settings are indeed working greatly (from eq, to pitch)

EDIT: of course gapless is working like a charm hehe

Stay Tuned

I'm very interested in this, I love the sound quality of my R0 but hate the interface.

What's your rough estimate on when it will be completed?

That's not a question, it's difficult to say
But so far:
- audio is working (still need to implement HW volume)
- backlight basics are working too
- genral RB functions are working of course (from plugins to filemanager).
- settings are now saved correctly

Things todo are lots, like:
- battery/charging monitor. Undervoltage auto-off (!! Important because I've seen you could keep R0 on a lot before turning off, going down the safe level I guess)
- prepare a nice ROM, based on modded v 2.20, for public test
- radio
- as3543 codec proper handling (volume control, balancing etc)
- usb functionality
- power management
- test battery consumption
- etc etc

For a public beta we need at least to solve the first 2 steps and HW volume

To keep you informed: I finally created the new target in RB source code, so now it's really started.

EDIT: here a proof hihi

I didn't realize you were working on this. If you're doing an app port to a linux target, you should probably get in contact with the other people working rockbox as an application as soon as possible and discuss with them the design decisions you've made. I suspect they'll have strong feelings about the "right" way to implement parts of your port because of the need to keep the application stuff working on PC, your target, android, etc. Its best you work them out sooner or else it may be much harder to merge your work later on. I recommend checking out #rockbox on freenode and talking to the people there.

Good work. We would love to see the source and possibly get it upstream.

Is this an native port (i.e. you're replacing the existing firmware) or an application port? If it's an app port, what is the sound layer based on (SDL, alsa, or ...) and why do you want "as3543 codec proper handling (volume control, balancing etc)" instead of leaving it to the OS?

Hehe the RB experts are here now

Here is the 1st draft or my very 1st RB theme:

As you can see it's very close to the original Samsung now playing screen, that was the goal but there are some interesting improvements:
-file format and bitrate display
-album year display
-12h OR 24h clock
-thicker progress bar

@lebellium: nice work

@saratoga + kugel: you are both right. But it's only a week that I'm working on that hehe.
First of all it's an application, based on SDL+ALSA.
Basically I created a new target, PLATFORM_HOSTED|PLATFORM_YPR0 (this for some extra that are available on a real device). And we have SAMSUNG_YPR0(_PAD) device.
I created a ypr0 folder under hosted, copying the SDL and removing lots of stuff (touchscreen, mouse etc).
I've done this without using ifdefs because otherwise the code, I guess, would be difficult to read (really, lot's of things removed)
+ the keypad reading isn't done in SDL, but reading /dev/r0Btn device.
I will be in the chat sooner or later hihi. I even need to update the port page.

Thanks for support.

By the way, yesterday I finally reversed how to use the samsung afe.ko module to read/write as3543 registers. (That's another point to discuss).

EDIT: okay I've spoken with kugel. In a few I will post somewhere a diff

Great. I'm sure people will have feedback.

BTW, how does installation work? Do you upload rockbox to the player alone, patch a firmware update, something else?

Using Rockbox (Rasher Daily Builds) on Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0. It's still a bit rough, but for straight music playing RaaA is quite usuable. I was surprised.

Modded firmware is necessary (recompiled kernel + SDL lib)
The only shit is that recompiling the kernel makes a bug in the default application: after the light is gone, the player freezes. Bah...

Then the script is called from SD (or NAND but rb is compiled to work on sd now); the modded firmware is capable to load script(s).

Dual booting will be easily possible keeping pressed a key (like in the modded firmware I added safe mode by pressing back key...)
Another shit is that safe mode isn't working with recompiled kernel (still to figure out why!)
