Hi everyone. My fuze is starting to wear out, and it's also close to reaching it's full capacity (8 gb + 8 gb from the sd)
So I realize I really need a large capacity player as my music continues to grow. These are the things I'm looking for.
I've been looking at some things, namely the J3 and the X7. J3 I'm really interested in, but it doesn't have the same capacity as the X7. And then I was looking at this thread and the X7 is huge! Most of the time my music player is in my pocket, and I do usually carry a lot in my pocket. Another option I have also heard about is that I could go for an ipod? Not sure which version though. And I was wondering if you rockbox it, would you have to use a program to transfer music? (I think zune is out of the question because I need to use a program to transfer music) Thanks for your help! p.s. I live in the US |

You could go for another Fuze again but with a 32GB MicroSD card,so the capacity didn't reach its limit just yet.
As for iPods, only the 5th/5.5th generation ipods and lower can be rockboxed, after that they work like USB drives and files can be dragged and dropped on them like so.

I'd probably look at either RapidRepair or iPodzens for a refurb 5th Gen iPod. Lagoo56 recently upgraded his so if you check his recent posts you may be able to find his sources. If you click on his name in his post it will let you see all his posts.
Also I'm not sure that info as to which iPods can be Rockboxed is complete. I'd check the Target Status page for the complete listing.

Here is a refurbished 80GB 5.5th Gen iPod Video being sold for $139.99 http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Apple-iPo...item4cf7e5ec43 RapidRepair isn't really a good place to buy a refurbished ipod video from because they are basically overcharged compared to everywhere else. All the parts are dirt cheap to begin with but RapidRepair charges too much.

Exactly why I advised they check your posts for sources. You've dealt with the ins and outs of actually acquiring and working on one. I just know generic sources.

So if I'm looking for a player with a high storage is ipod 5.5 generally the better choice?
It's cheaper than both the J3 and the X7, and carries more than the J3. Also just glancing at the X7 forums, it seems like the reviews are wishy washy. |

Yes a 5.5 iPod is a solid choice for everything that you listed and Rockbox does add gapless playback to it,as well as support for all the audio formats that you're looking for.

Also, check Craigslist, especially if you live in or near a metro area. Great deals on things like older generation iPods can be found, with sellers often just looking to get rid of old toys.
For example: http://fresno.craigslist.org/ele/2570906414.html Since we're on the subject... Is it only gen 5.5, not the gen 5 iPod, that can have its hard drive upgraded to 160+ GB? If so, can both the 30 GB and 80 GB versions of the gen 5.5 be upgraded similarly? What's the largest hard drive currently available that will work? |

There are quite a few drives available new on eBay for less than half the cost at RapidRepair. Do a search for the part number MK2431GAH.

Alright that sounds good.
One more thing, I'm guessing ipod classic and ipod 5th generation are completely different. Is that correct? |
