Default Rumor: Zune Brand to Be Reorganized on the 24th

There is a rumor floating around that the Zune services will be reorganized into different branches.

The rumor is based on a tweet which said

Quote:
" @manan @clubdirthill Wee little rumor seeping out now: Zune next to be split into Xbox mobile, Xbox Live & Windows Live Zune on the 24th.

And the Zune backend platform will become a “Nokia services on Azure” offering, with content from Netflix, Last.fm & Hulu among others.

Zune Pass will slowly be merged with Xbox Live Gold, adding more 3rd-party content to the subscription (like ESPN).

@manan @clubdirthill There are many fundamental changes coming there, but no details on that until the Microsoft Next Conference this year."

I know Club from Zunited quite some time ago. He always seemed to be pretty accurate with these things, but I don't think he's an insider.

If anything holds true in this rumor it sounds like they would be focusing on a cloud based playing system to compete with apple's ping, google music, and amazon cloud player. As for the rebranding, I think it would be making it more integrated with windows live and xbox. It would be more like Zune for windows live, Zune on xbox, Zune on the phone etc. . For Zune on windows live they would make it more integrated so that even if you didn't own zune you could see what your friends are playing. As for Hulu, ESPN and all that, I think they would just combine Hulu, Netflix, ESPN under zune on the xbox. Zune on the xbox would be a place for video and music choices instead of having 3 different apps. It would advertise zune to those who use Netflix and would make navigating and finding what entertainment you wanted easier. For example, say zune carries such and such movie but Netflix doesn't you could see which one offered it and which one had the best price as well as offering several options. The combining of xbox live gold with zune pass, maybe it would allow xbox users to listen to music on xbox without the credits (and more focsed on the cloud). The zune pass option would stil be available for the 10 song credits as well as being able to play the music on multiple devices just as it does now. This is all just wishful thinking though .

The event just finished. They didn't mention anything about reorganizing Zune. But they did show the Zune logo during the presentation so that is an indication that Zune is here to stay.

Why would MS even think about dumping Zune? Its a great tax write-off and great test-bed for their future mobile OS's. Its also a "known" brand.

A few weeks ago I was at a Wal-Mart in Macon, MO and seen a guy looking at the Ipod Touch, I decided to let him try my ZuneHD hands on and low and behold, he liked the ZuneHD better because of its easier to use interface.

That same Wal-Mart is now going to put up a small demo PC with the Zune software on it and a demo ZuneHD16 for users to try both the player and the software.

Niiiceee

But yeah its a bit illogical that they'd rebrand it when they've put so much effort into it as a brand it in the past two years.

Cool! I can't believe anyone would make the decision to pick up the ZuneHD now, of all times, though.

I would, but only if the price was slashed a good deal - maybe 50% off.
