Default from HD202 + ipod touch to ... Not sure + J3, advise needed, please.

Hi everyone,

i would like some advice for new phones!

For a quick presentation, I'm Belgian and actually live in new Zealand.
I'm a musician, a drummer to be more precise and i worked for a couple of years for a cd store. ( free gigs yeah!!!!!)

Anyway, my concern is that my ipod touch start to die ( stay only 2 days on sleep mode...) and i thought that i gonna replace it by a cowon J3 ( thank u ABI!).

But then comes the time to ask myself about my sennheiser HD202 ( that i use for now 3 years).
I quite like them but the cable is way too long!!! the sound for me it's ok.
I listen music on the ipod and my macbook higher MP3 rate from my cd collection in Belgium ( and now i start to collect FLAC)

My budget is less than 200 us$.

Style : I'm not sure but probably iem, full size headphone are cool but when you travel...I need something light, portable.

Use : going to work when i'm in the mood to walk, at home, in my bed before to sleep and for my futur travels.
I want really comfortable one that i can sleep with and that don't' move every 5 minutes when i walk.
Stay in place and don't fell them.

Media :

60% Rock
( From Mastodon, tool, slayer to Qotsa, faith no more, NIN to Jeff buckley, radiohead, blonde redhead),

15% Hip hop- trip hop
( Dr Dre, cypress, massive attack, portishead)

15% Jazz- Reggae ( Steve coleman, M Davis, The black Seeds, Fat freddies drop)

10% Electro ( AFX, vitalic )

Source : Mainly my future J3, my computer and till I have it my Roland TD9

I would like a good resolution, presence and soundstage.
No noise if i move the cable ( friend of mine have this problem with a CX400, i'have to do more research about impedance and all that stuff)
a good isolation and i dont' want to be heard by people around me.

If you have any advise or recommendation or comment, please.

Thanks,

Hooch ( yeah, i like the Melvins too!)

A good start in looking for new iem’s would be here and I wouldn’t diss the hd202’s if you like them so much, if it’s just the jack you can easily replace that or if they need all new cables you can get an idea of how to here, good luck and welcome to abi

Thanks for the tips walkgood.
I checked your first link, and the phonak look interesting.
Would they match better than other with my kind of music and my preferences?
Otherwise i can have a Ie 7 for 190$, compare to the phonak?

Cheers

I have not listened to the phonak’s so I can’t advise you there but dfkt did a review on them here and there’s other members that own them, someone should be able to respond to your questions soon. Also they are releasing a dual driver Phonak 232 soon you can read about it here.

hey hooch I am in the same situation (have a J3 already), and I opted for the Sehnheiser IE7 - will pull the trigger soon.

As for the J3 compared to the iPod, be prepared for 2 shocks:
- interface: J3 is much worse than iPod
- sound quality: J3 is much, much better than iPod

well I only use the interface for like 5 minutes a day, but I spend a few good hours listening to music, so obviously I only care about that.

Good end bad news... My Ipod is not dead...It was just really tired of seeking wifi signal from work to home every day ( plus the shitty network at work...).
( The Cowon J3 is still on my mind)

But i was wondering if i could find ( still on the optic to find a lighter Phone) a IEM with a wide sound stage like the HD202 ? Or is it so specific to semi open(?)

A Shure Se 530 for 320 NZ$ second hand ???? Yes???

Cheers

P.S:The source of my music through Itunes Via Macboock would be more better than my Ipod or a Cowon J3? ( I'm a Newbie and don't speak really well English , sorry guys...

^ first thing I would do is get either the EQu or Equalizer app for your touch. They make it sound like a real DAP/PMP no matter what phones you have. Who knows, they might bring out new life in your current phones!

No, MACS tend to brick a Cowon player - so buy with caution!

That's what I meant, Macs are jealous of Cowon, they only tolerate iPods

(it's a joke)

Well, just in case, as quite a few MAC owners have learned the hard way.

I thought that the Mac/Cowon issues were only rumors?

And about the interface, the J3 is customizable, and there are tons of User Created Interfaces (UCIs) out there. You can (probably) browse around here if you want.
