I believe .avi is a wrapper for the xvid codec? It's possible some .avi files are corrupted or perhaps wrapping a different codec which isn't compatible.
But, I am no codec expert. I really don't even understand what I just said.

Yea, I'm not an expert either. But typically, .avi is an extension for the XViD codec, which is supported. However, it also COULD be a different codec (I forget which) and it isn't supported. I've had an issue with some of my files being this way.
If the software lets you add it to the library (so that it shows up under the videos tab), then it'll work. |

AVI is a container that can hold a lot of different codecs, XviD and DivX being the most popular. However, it's certain instructions/switches in those codecs that can make a movie not work properly on some players, such as GMC (global motion compensation) or QPEL (quarter pixel estimation). This is highly technical info, so just remember that AVI and AVI can be very different things - some work, some don't.

^that.
To be safe, you should go find out what codec the files are (should be in the properties), and know that XViD is supported. You can find the other supported codecs out there on the interwebs, I just know that XViD IS supported, and that it's one of the most prolific formats for things you find on the web. |

Even if they're Xvid or DivX, they still might not work cause they use QPEL or GMC. You can find out if your movies use those switches with Media Info or Gspot.

Also, I don't think the Zune supports DivX. Only XviD.

Yea, DivX isn't supported. But it's less common because it's not an open-source codec (or something like that, can't remember specific terminology).
