Most modern professional audio apps and VST plugins work with 64 bit float internal precision, or even higher. That's perfectly fine and adequate for a destructive editing workflow, and it actually is real 64 bit and makes sense in the digital domain.
Reading that PDF about ESS' DAC however makes little sense, and I see no real application for having that (supposed) 32 bit depth implemented in a piece of hardware that's right after all the digital editing steps, when the signal enters the analog domain. Any quality software can do the job of downsampling any high resolution file just fine - no need for exotic hardware there.

I reckon it's a ploy so people will start buying the higher memory versions of devices to fit everything on. Especially for this 'awesome totally cool new amazing sound 24bit offers!!!!'
The average person ain't ganna fork out heaps on something they dont need - but now they will!! Also, @kashrp, congrats man!

I love how this article is all about Apple and Beats - two unstoppable forces leading to crappier audio. . trying to make audio better in way which doesn't matter. . . so sad.
This would be lossless though right? |
