issues transferring using J River

I just bought a 8 GB Clip + with a 32 GB SD. I have J River set up to convert unsupported and high bitrate files into a lossy format when transferring but for some reason I get errors and the program locks up whenever I try to transfer anything in an AAC format and it even doesn't like FLACs sometimes. It'll get to the point where it should upload the file and then instead it will just say "error" in the status column under the device. Any suggestions on how to remedy this?

as a side note: the firmware for the device is up to date and J River is also up to date
