Well that question has already been answered I guess, and what he's saying is that if you want something good that's worth the money, you'd better save this $50 and wait till you can add at least another $30. It's a kind advice to not waste money.
There's a lot of crap under $50, some are worth checking out (like the ones mentioned), but you sound like you want something exciting. There is no subwoofer for your ears under $50, if you want something like that just save up for the 79$ Hippo VBs and don't waste your $50 on some bloated wannabe-bass IEM any local store sells. Personally I feel that around $30, you pay a relatively large part for the packaging and other materials, perhaps even marketing. When you reach $100, that's where quality can come into play, at least that's how I feel about it.

I agree wait until you get about $30 or $40 more, then theirs tax. Uncle Sam. Hopping over to Best Buy with $50 I would turn around and walk right back out. Or go play with the new camera I'm thinking about buying.

My intentions were as Brett stated, i just think it's worth waiting to get something in the next bracket because the leap in quality both build and sound wise from cheap $10-20 iem to $50 is not very big, but to $80-100 range it's a large jump if you get the right ones.
If you are hell bent on getting some cheaper ones now i would agree with the i590, they perform as well as the S4 which are twice their price.

Good solid advice from everyone on this thread.
![]() Indeed, if looking for bass performance with still great sound across the spectrum, VBs are excellent. And yeah, for sure, if one can swing it, moving up to 20-30USD in price does get you a lot more in terms of quality IEMs - its like buying a stereo system for anything. I don't care how good your source/front end devices are...if you have shitty, crappy speakers, then guess what? You will get shitty, crappy sound.

Quote:
1) save yourself some cash and go with one of the $30 recommended models. 2) get the i590 for $50. I kind of like the hippo groove in this range as well. 3) save up a bit longer and get something like the VB. |

I was pleasantly surprised with the Hippo Groove as well. When compared to the VB i found they had less bass quantity and extension but brighter highs that really didn't get sibilant at all. Though that is comparing them with only a few hours on the VB and after just taking the Groove out of the box so that could all change a little.

Seems like all the hippo prducts are very reliant on proper fit to get good sound. I thought the grooves sucked at first. Fiddled with the fit and bam the bass suddenly arrived. Still can't get the 10EB to give me any bass. I am sure it's the seal though.

Hippo VB is @79$ (I have on order one).
Which best earphones are in 80-100$ bracket(knowing will help me in future)? Also, there is Philips SHE9800 that has 13.5mm driver that sound good too. edit: Also I have AKG K324P and I like these also. Last edited by rohit3192; 01-09-2011 at 02:20 PM. |
