Can't say for sure as I've never heard the gumstick but my question would be; with what phones and are they comparing them volume matched, I doubt it. Plus you can rockbox the clip+ which gives you more sound enhancement tweaks.

As I understand it the only advantage of the gumstick over the clip+ is the strength of its amp. If you're using relatively high impedance 'phones, and don't want to carry around an amp, the gumstick may be able to drive them better than the clip. So whether or not you want a hippo gumstick depends upon the 'phones it'll be paired with, and whether or not you're willing to carry around an amp with your clip.
