Default Getting a R0. Help needed on the firmware issue & a few questions.

Hey folks,

So I'm finally thinking of getting this player!

Was waiting ages for it to launch then the firmware issues made me backtrack.

Seems like it's been solved besides I can't find any other player with as much options as this player.

Down to my questions -

Regarding the Firmware -

1. As soon as I turn on the player the first time I will put it in "MSC" mode & shut it down.

Then connect it to the PC, let it charge for 10-15 mins. Put the firmware 1.22 file & let it update.

2. I'll use it in "MSC" mode since that's what is recommended.

Hope these steps should take care of the firmware issues?

Regarding the Music/Interface -

1. Can I make/save Playlists on the player itself?

2. Will I be able to add any song I want through browsing to the "Now Playing/On-The-Go" playlist without playing it or while listening to another track?

eg. On the Creative Players...you can listen to a song in the Now Playing section & can add songs by different artists/albums to the Now Playing section.

3. Can I browse the Library alphabetically? Or I will have keep holding the down arrow to go to a particular artist?

4. What's the capacity Windows shows for the 8GB player? 7.40GB? 7.20GB?

5. Will the player support Class 2 16GB microSD cards? What about Class 4?

These are all the questions I can think off now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Regarding the firmware
That's OK but you have to fully charge it the first time so much more than 10-15min, rather 2hrs.

Regarding the Music/Interface
1) Yes
2) Yes. But that's not really a "Now Playing" playlist. There are 5 OTG playlists. But you can use the 1st OTG playlist as a "Now Playing" playlist if you want. Personaly I hate the Creative playlist system.
3) No you can't. Either you use the down arrow and it scrolls line by line, or you use the right arrow and it scrolls faster eg page by page
4) 7578MB available
5) Yes it does. I don't see why there should be a support difference between class 2 and 4.

Thanks so much lebellium for the quick response!

So I need to fully charge the player first time? I suppose firmware updating only takes 4-10 mins max.?

I won't be transferring any files or removing anything.

Anyway I guess I'll do a full charge. Better safe than sorry.

I'm pretty much addicted to Creative's interface been using for 6+ years...but tired their new players since the past 8 months (many I might add) Very disappointed none live upto the Vision:M.

7.5 GB is pretty decent. I'll use the onboard memory for music only.

For videos I'll use the microSD card.

Very glad it supports On-The-Go playlists.

Just one quick question...

While playing a song there are playing options "Normal, Repeat, Repeat Track, Shuffle" The Creative one's have this option "Track once, Track x1"

It just plays the selected track from the playlist off 100 tracks.

Is this feature available on the Samsung?

Edit - Need your personal opinion on this.

I'll be getting this player through my friend in USA...so by chance if I stumble across the firmware bug.

I'm pretty much screwed but it's fixable I can ask him to take it back & send it to Samsung but this process will be very time consuming.

So would you recommend waiting for the Q3 to launch? Or you never know the Q3 might as well develop a firmware issue? lol

Any ideas when the Q3 will launch in USA? Capacities are 8 & 16 as you've mentioned in the Q3 forums....but since R0 is only available in 8 gigs on amazon...I don't expect much for the Q3.

I don't think I can wait any longer besides the launch price of the 16gig Q3 will be pretty much out of my budget of sub $100

Creative MP3 division is dead since 2007. They have not made good mp3 players after the Zen Vision:M. Fortunately I get the latest ones for free for my reviews because I would never spend $1 for those devices... lol

I'm not sure I understood what you mean regarding the play mode:
You want the player to repeat continually the same track? That's basically the "Repeat One" mode on Samsung DAPs

The release of the Q3 has been delayed worldwide for some reasons I'm not allowed to tell you. And usually you get the Samsung DAPs in the USA 4-6months after their release in Korea and Europe. I don't know the release date in the US but my personal opinion is: don't expect the Q3 US release before Q1 2011.
Besides the Q3 screen is smaller (2,2" for the Q3, 2,6" for the R0 > "For videos I'll use the microSD card.")
And actually the Q3 won't be released in 16GB capacity I think. Only 4 and 8GB without microSD card slot...

Thanks again!

I suppose I'll order it by this week.

If it craps out then there goes my luck..lol

The play mode on the Creative is like a "Track x1" feature.

eg. In the Now Playing list you have 100 songs.

And you just want to play 1 track eg. Track 47.

So You play that track & select "Track x1" option. It will play that track one time & Stop.

Won't repeat, won't shuffle, won't go to the next track.

I reckon only Creative has this option, I've not seen this option even in the iPod's.

Anyway R0 here I come. If I don't jump to R0 then I really won't buy anything from anyone else, just seems like a waste. (mp3)

Maybe the WaveII phone from Samsung if at all I get cold-feet in the next couple of days regarding the R0, but will have to start saving up for the Wave II lol.

If you follow the advices (MSC etc), there should be no issue *normaly*.
I've tried to brick my R0s many times and I've never managed to do it...

Indeed, there is no such a play option on Samsung DAPs

Samsung phones are not as good as Samsung DAPs regarding audio and video playback

A Couple of more questions for you lebellium hehe...

Regarding the firmware -

I downloaded it from your site...

I see only 1 .ROM file.

So if I want a US Firmware (to get over the volume limit) I have to select that in the player?

Or there's a separate US Firmware .ROM file?

Also, how do I update the firmware?

I place the .ROM file in one of the folders in the player? Or double click it from windows & it'll automatically update the player?

Regarding the MicoSD -

How is the browsing feature in the MicroSD menu?

Is it based on ID3 tags for music?

Or it's based on Folders?

Coz I'm thinking of getting a 16gig mSD card & putting my music on there.

The players 8gig I'll use for FLAC files.

Regarding FLAC files, does the player read the ID3 tags of the FLAC files? or it only displays them as file name even if I put them on the player memory?

Thanks again.

There is a single worldwide firmware and different region codes.
The region code may be changed with the config.dat trick.
There is only a volume limit with the region code FR. If your region code is EU, US or KR, there is no volume limit

You could have done some research before, this question has already been answered thousands of times on this forum

The R0 supports FLAC tags (song, artist, album, genre) both on internal memory and microSD. It doesn't support the album art though.

me too.
good thing, the r0 (almost) every time saves the last paused position
in an .idx file or so called (not sure tbh). most of you know these files i bet.
for EVERY single movie-file! pretty convinient.

additionally:

a) (i wrote about this method in another thread somewhere.)
what would really be VERY cool, if the user could see AND select
those stop-mark-information-files within folders containing, for example,
audiobooks. the user could skip to the sub-folders and look for that file,
if present, that was the last (cd) folder "used" and just select that file
and continue whereever stopped earlier.
i started to use a workaround: i delete the last heard file, so i can find
out later (sometimes a week or even more), where i left of.
ie. track 10 than 12, 11 is missing... ah, ok thats where i left of.....

b) player and board only supports usb2. fact. but.... its horrible slow to
copy stuff from an internal hd to the sd-card. frankly even copy-processes
to the player take very long. just my impression.
any hints to speed up copys?
thx

What I really dislike with these players is the back button when in shuffle mode. It really should not shuffle backwards. There are so many times where I accidentally skip a song I want to listen to because I am flicking forward too fast. Then I press back, bam, it shuffles again. The most unusual aspect of this is that it SOMETIMES, not often, works and pressing back does in fact go back to previous song. But I haven't been able to find a pattern.

Really wish this was fixed as I can't really understand why anyone would want to shuffle backwards when its exactly the same as shuffling forward.

...and if I want to shuffle with back key?
I think that it is normal...i don't know the behaviour in other devices but in most software it shuffles when pressing back/ffd btn!
