Default 8GB Clip+ is a 9 Hour Wonder

I am sorry to report that the 8 gig Clip+ that I bought new from Amazon and raved about has become another of the 9 Hour Wonders! 3rd full discharge of the battery just occurred at
9 hours and 57 minutes. The battery indicator looks almost half full and out of nowhere it shuts down on low battery warning. I am beyond discouraged because I have almost $100
invested in the two Clip+ that I own and neither will go much over 9 hours. My settings are not on high and the only thing I do use quite a bit is the center button to see the time
elapsed. I have a memory card in one device but not in this new one. 8GB is no good if you have to spend so much time charging. All firmware has been installed.

All of my regular clips both 2 and 4 GB get between 12-14 hours. Some of them are two years old and heavily used. Go figure!

9 hours and 57 minute is 10 hours not 9 hours, and that is generally what people get out of it. Without using the ui much and just shuffling i get 11-12 hours out of mine on official firmware, but i don't use the OF anymore as rockbox is far better, stable and gets me 16-18 hours now.

If your new clip+ doesn't satisfy you i suggest returning it, as there is nothing we can do to help and this topic is bordering on beating a dead horse as it comes up at least 2-3 times a month and does not ever end well.

10hrs isn't bad - and you have 2 Clip+s so that's nearly 20hrs.

I always carry 2 players, my Clip+ and an E2.

The older Clips have a slightly higher capacity battery.

That is a good point.....I usually take my Clip+with me along with my E345(rated 30 hours) and I have an extra wall charger that works with the E345 and Clip+ that stays in my backpack. So I'm covered.

This. When you consider the incredible level of integration of the device, it's absolutely amazing that they can get 10 hours at all, as they have less space for a battery than the original Clip (thanks to the MicroSDHC slot).

If you're playing higher-bitrate mp3s, and you press the center button often, you're going to get an average of around 10 hours (some people get more, others get less - that's the nature of the semi industry).

9-10 hours isn't too bad compared with the old hard disk players. Who listens for that long at a stretch? It does mean you have to be a bit conscientious about charging it up when you're not using it, which is a bit annoying. It will get worse as the unit gets older, since lithium rechargeable batteries lose about half their capacity over a couple years.

Only real answer is a bigger battery like the Fuze's.

I'm happy with 9-10 hours play time. Good enough for a full day at work. Easy enough to charge.

You can try rockboxing the clip as that tends to improve battery life. You can try to use the UI less and lower the amount of time the screen stays on when you do use it. And as has already been stated, playing FLAC or vorbis on the clip will drain significantly more battery than mp3 will, and higher bitrate mp3 will drain more than low bitrate, although not nearly to the degree that lossless will.
