Ok as you probably know from the title, I'm looking for a dap that fits these requirements in order of importance:
1. Under AUD$200 including shipping to Australia 2. Suitable sound quality with Audio-Technica ATH-AD700's 3. Expandable memory (microsd etc.) 4. Ability to play unconverted video 5. HDMI socket? Will add more as I think of them........... Also are Chinese brand players any good (like Onda, Teclast etc.)? Looking at a Teclast T51. Thanks appreciate any help. |

I guess the Samsung R0 can play many video formats unconverted. It is probably the least expensive video player with support for many video formats.

To be perfectly honest, I think 200 AUD for the things you are looking for is not enough. I would suggest the cowon s9 but it does not have and HDMI port and expandable memory. It does have great SQ though. If you really want the ability to play unconverted videos and an HDMI socket. Get a PMP such as the upcoming cowon V5.
Don't get me wrong here, I am personally not a fan of any cheap Chinese mp3 players. Their rather cheaply made and sound rather bad with their buggy crappy software as well. If you do decide to buy them, make sure you've tried it and make sure you could live with the hard and slow software that they generally have. I rather wait and spend more money on quality gear. That's just me though. Hope this helps.. Welcome to abi>>

@OP: Agree with jjrosaria...your price point for what you want/need may be a bit too low given what is available at the moment. The V5 may be your best bet for your criteria...
Also agree with the comments on the elcheapo Chinese brands of PMPs. I have recently seen/felt/handled many of them in person on a recent trip to Hong Kong. TBH, most felt incredibly cheap with generally terrible GUIs. However, screen resolution looked pretty great on some of them. I think the general consensus here is to stay away from them, unless you don't mind spending some experimental cash to check them out. In this case, perhaps the Nationite brand might be the best of the bunch.... And FYI, check the pics in this thread to see these Chinese PMPs out in the wild: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=54576 cheers and good luck, -lestatar

Hmmm just saw the clip+, does it support rockbox?
Might just get a clip+ for music and a Chinese brand player with good video.

There's no cheapskate player with an HDMI output. And rarely any decent player plays all exotic video codecs/containers. The Cowon O2 and V5 are the lower end, the Viliv S5 is the high end. Some cheapo Chinese players might play several formats, but woe to you if you need any support.
The Clip+ supports Rockbox and is an excellent audio player.

Yeah, you guys really hate all of the Chinese players, but I might do some more research, maybe I can find a player that stands out from the rest.
Edit: Found the Ramos T11TE, looks solid, decent sound quality, hdmi, microsd = $150 Might just get this and a Clip+? http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.p...roducts_id=381 (not the price I found but has good specs) Last edited by randomdude7; 05-03-2010 at 07:42 PM. |

We don't hate Chinese players, we hate the lack of "QUALITY" Chinese players,..........

randomdude7: Because of my recent excursion to Hong Kong, I was indeed able to handle quite a few of the elcheapo Chinese PMPs. Like I said, the screen resolutions were quite impressive on a number of them, but nearly all felt incredibly cheap and tbh, a bit flimsy. Buttons that were cheap and tacky [and sometimes misaligned], unit bodies that creaked and showed some pretty poor fit and finish and GUIs that were often slow, buggy and extremely low rent - at least 3 devices locked up on me while the guys were trying to demo them [simply by changing the GUI language to English for me]...
But all this is not necessarily a knock on the Chinese brands - they are very popular in Asia so people are buying them for sure. But the point is at the really low prices these things average, just how great/durable/well-designed/well-engineered can they possibly be? True, I almost picked up one promising looking unit for around $100USD - if I even cared 1 iota for watching videos on screens as small as those PMPs, I might have pulled the trigger. But even had that been the case, I would never have expected the device to last very long - it essentially would have been a throwaway experiment for me. But it's your money and your mileage may indeed vary :-) Just remember, caveat emptor... cheers and good luck! -lestatar
