With respect to cross talk and hiss, an amp can't do anything more then an impedance adapter would get you (since an amp used to attenuate volume is basically just an impedance adapter on the input side). The main advantage of the amp is that you can go louder and not just quieter, and that you don't get any shift in the frequency response due to dampening. I'm not sure how important this would be in practice.
