Think I hate my IEMs

So yesterday I bought the JVC Marshamallows at WalMart. I didn't expect the sound quality to be amazing but at least decent. I pop em in my Cowon S9 and put them in, my first IEMs. They sounded horrible. The drums sounded terrible, a high whistle sound was made whenever a voice made an s sound and male voices all around sound terrible. Overall, I think the stock Cowon earbuds sounded better. Will burn-in help? How exactly does burn-in work? Or maybe I'm starting to think it is supposed to sound like this and I am just hearing this for the first time. Also, the music sounds farther away then when I am using earbuds. Any help or advice?
